COLUMBIA Arnel Monroe will tell you he is not that bright, then quote from a book seconds later. He will say he is not the nicest guy right before he calls himself lovable. He leads a defense that in 2009 was called “lazy” and “lackadaisical” and in 2010 is allowing less than 10 points per game.

The personality of the Hickman football team’s defensive coordinator has had lasting effects on players,Ajax shirt, both past and present, who have come through the program. His impact on the 2010 unit is undeniable.

Monroe is a Hickman lifer. He graduated in 1985 after a successful career at wide receiver that led him to Central Missouri State University, where he says with a knowing smile that he “was on the team.” He returned to Hickman in 1993 and has been there since, now working a full-time job as a special education teacher at the school.

His practice-field rants are the stuff of Hickman legend. If a player doesnt do his job, Monroe is going to let him know loudly. Hes going to get so passionate, so close to a players face, that they can smell his breath. Players have called him “hard-edged” and an “angry old man.”

“If you mess up and come to the sideline, hell make you look stupid,” senior Dylan Rodes said. “But we know hes just trying to make you a better football player.”

When they get back to the locker room,Newcastle United shirt, or “barn” as Monroe calls it, players see a different side of the coach. He may blast a player for a missed assignment in practice, but soon after joke around with that same player in the locker room.

“When youre off the field your job is to be there for the kids,” Monroe said. “Thats part of the coaching for me when these kids are young men going into adulthood. You tell stories, the occasional dirty joke, thats just the natural thing for me.”

Current and former Kewpies called him “passionate,” “wise” and “emotional.” But there was one word that continued to come up more than any other. “Father.”

“His love for his players is very obvious, he really is like a father-figure to us,” said former Hickman defensive back Nick Timberlake, a 2007 graduate. “I feel like I could call him up on a Friday night and get a ride home from the bars.”

Monroe used a quote from Jeffrey Marxs book “A Season of Life” to describe his philosophy on the relationship between players and coaches.

“Theres a scene in the locker room where the coaches ask the players What is our job? and the players respond To love us,” Monroe said. “Then they ask the players, What is your job and the players respond, To love each other.”

Monroe goes out of his way to embody that spirit.

“Theyve gone from being brothers, when I started, to sons now,” Monroe said. “I love my football kids as much as I love my own kids.”

The teaching moments arent always bombastic. Monroe is an expert at simplifying things for his players and using humor to get them to understand. The Hickman defense relies on defensive “keys” from the way an offense lines up that will indicate to the defense what they need to do.

“Keys are like your mother,” Monroe tells them. “They aint ever going to lie to you.”

This season’s edition of the Kewpies’ defense has been doing such a good job reading its keys and reacting that its recorded two shutouts in four games thus far. Members of that defense are giving part of the credit to Monroe.

“Hes had by far the biggest impact,” Rodes said. “He gets us up and gives us the tools, then he lets us play football and trusts our athleticism.”

Leave it to Monroe to give all the credit to the players.

“These kids have bought into what were doing here,Italy football shirt,” he said. “Theyve truly become students of the game.”

Watching the referees

二月 11, 2012

When the boos came cascading down on referee Curtis Shaw after he called the foul that put Marshall Brown on the line to hit the deciding free throws with 1.8 seconds, it didn’t surprise former referee Charles Greene.

He’s seen it many times in his 35 years of officiating, 19 of which were spent refereeing Division I basketball.

Although he’s retired from refereeing,Sunderland shirt, he’s currently an observer for the Big 12 conference, monitoring the referees at every Oklahoma men’s basketball game.

“Basically an observer is a critiquer,” Greene said. “We don’t give any opinions,Paris Saint Germain shirt, we just report as to what we have seen at the ball games. I look at the whole ball game, nothing in particular. How it’s administrated, whether officials were in position and all of those sorts of things.”

After the fans booed Shaw on calling a foul in the corner on a chaotic play where Gray bumped into Brown as he was shooting, Greene offered his take after the game.

“You have to have guts if you are going to officiate,” Greene said. “If whatever is there is there and you make the call and you’re not guessing and you’re in position then that’s just part of the job.”

Since Greene was at the opposite end of the court on the same side as the play, he didn’t have a clear view

of the play but he offered his take on the situation.

“I didn’t see that play real good so I really don’t have an opinion. Let’s say for arguments’ sake that the person (Gray) did foul, now would it have been fair for Missouri if the foul hadn’t been called? There are two sides to every story.”

Like most college referees, officiating was a side job to Greene who worked in many levels of education from a classroom teacher to an administrator.

His experience in tense situations officiating offered him good experience for his jobs in education.

“It teaches you how to communicate with people and how to be patient,” Greene said. “You know it helped me in my profession when I was working because I was always dealing with people who were upset and emotional.”

SNEAKEY SOUTHPAWS:It’s only natural to become accustomed to guarding players a certain way, which usually means shading a player to his the left-hand.

The match-up against the Sooners offered a somewhat unique challenge for the Tigers guards, as Oklahoma starting guards Nate Carter and Terrell Everett are left-handed.

Tigers guard Jimmy McKinney acknowledged the challenge the match-up presented the pair of southpaws presented.

“It’s always hard to guard left-handed ball players because it’s awkward,” McKinney said. “There are things that they do that you haven’t seen before.”

Thomas Gardner said playing against a backcourt with two left-handers is very rare and that he had to make adjustments as they game went on as far as shading Oklahoma’s guards to their right-hand.

McKinney said a match-up earlier in the year with UMKC’s Quinton Day, a left-handed point guard, helped the Tigers corral Everett,Villareal shirt, who was averaging 10 points and 6.5 assists.

“I think it helped because how quick Quinton Day was, what type of shots Quinton Day was shooting, I think it really helped us guard Everett,” McKinney said.

Everett finished with 11 points and seven assists on 4-of-11 shooting, and Carter finished with nine points and three assists on 3-of-7 shooting.

Mavericks talking move to fairgrounds<br />

The Mid-Missouri Mavericks met with the Boone County Commissioners Monday afternoon to discuss the team’s proposal for a new privately-funded stadium.

“We made a presentation regarding the possibility of building a new stadium out at the fairgrounds,” Mavericks’ co-owner and president Gary Wendt said. “They couldn’t have been more professional or more receptive.”

Presiding commissioner Keith Schnarre said that he and his fellow commissioners will begin evaluating the proposal at a work session today.

“We have to study it to see if we have any interest or not,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of discussion to do. If we have more interest, we have more talks (with Wendt).”

The presentation outlined the costs for a new stadium at between $5 and $6 million. The figure includes an optional $1 million to be spent on upgrades.

“At least it’s something that doesn’t involve public money, which is better off than other proposals we’ve had in the past,” Schnarre said.

He said he couldn’t answer how likely the proposal was to being approved until initial discussions took place.

Under the plan, the stadium would be completed in time for the 2007 Frontier League season.

“They’re wanting to go pretty fast,South Africa football shirt,” Schnarre said. “Government moves pretty slow.”

Wendt and his brother, Greg, bought the Canton (Ohio) Coyotes of the Frontier League in October 2002,Celtic shirt, then moved the team to Columbia for the 2003 season.

The Wendt group made a deal with MU, signing a five-year lease to play at Taylor Stadium. One provision of the lease allowed the Mavericks to opt out after two years. Staying for a third,Porto shirt, though, meant that the full five-year term would be in effect.

Wendt discussed a privately-funded stadium earlier this month with city officials that included mayor Darwin Hindman and city manager Ray Beck.
