New routine helps<br /> Stephens roll past<br /> Mount Mary College

After a lackadaisical start to his team’s Tuesday night loss at Central Methodist, Stephens College basketball coach Dane Pavlovich thought the Stars needed a new warm-up to get ready to go at the beginning of each game.

The new warm-ups accomplished that purpose Saturday,Glasgow Rangers shirt, as Stephens jumped out to a 15-0 lead and cruised to an easy 88-19 victory against Mount Mary College,Lyon shirt, which arrived at Silverthorne Arena from Milwaukeewith only five players.

“(With) our warm-up before, we were doing a lot of stuff where we were standing,Kaizer Chiefs shirt,” junior captain Amy Burklund said. “We just wanted to add some things that we could individually add our own flair (to) and just get us going so we’ll get more ready and focused for the game.”

The Stars (4-15) also used a man-to-man full-court press in the first half to boost their intensity.

“We wanted to jump start a little momentum for us,” Pavlovich said. “At times we have the tendency to get lackadaisical and we didn’t want that from the beginning. We wanted to jump on them quick.”

Stephens forced the Blue Angels into 19 first half turnovers and held them to nine points in the first 20 minutes.

The Stars defense fueled its offense. All nine players scored in the first half.

“I loved the way we shared the basketball today,” Pavlovich said. “We really played together tonight. We had nine players working towards a very common task and doing something together.”

“It allowed (us) to work on some things,” Burklund said. “In the second half we wanted to focus on our offense and executing.”

Mount Mary (0-8), was outmanned.

“In the first half they kept up, but in the second half,Ajax shirt, they were pooped out,” coach Bernell Hooker said.

The victory opened up a three-game home stand for the Stars. Their next game is7 p.m. Monday against Avila.

“A lot of things that we did tonight I think we can take and learn from,” Burklund said. “(We can) take it into our next game.”

Fan friendly day<br />

Children ran around doing cartwheels on the floor of Hearnes Center while a few hundred people waited in line to get autographs from the Missouri volleyball team after its Black and Gold match on Friday.

Allowing fans on the court and signing autographs isn’t a one-time deal for the Missouri volleyball players. They do it for every game. The team prides itself on being fan friendly and reaching out to the community as much as possible. The team and coaches know how much the fan support helps them throughout the season, so the Tigers do whatever it can to give back to the fans and share its passion for the sport.

The free clinic for kids before its scrimmage is an example of this thinking.

“It shows the fans that we really do care,” Jessica Vander Kooi, a junior outside hitter, said. “We’re not out here just to build our fan base, we really do enjoy playing with these kids and helping them out. They come to our games, so we give back to the community.”

Coach Wayne Kreklow said it is important for the team to be active in the community.

“One of the things we try to really impress upon our players is that it isn’t about us all the time,” Kreklow said. “As athletes and coaches in whatever community you happen to be in, we feel we have a responsibility to give something back. I think particularly with these collegiate athletes, it’s good for them to understand the impact they can have.”

The fieldhouse echoed with yells of “Tigers” as about 250 children from kindergarten through eighth-grade rotated through six stations, each overseen by one or two players.

In the middle of the fieldhouse, Vander Kooi instructed her group to serve by repeating “Toss, step, hit.” Senior setter Lindsey Hunter told one young girl to put her elbows out, have her hands on top of her forehead and to only use her fingertips. Seniors Shen Danru and Lisa Boyd flipped little kids in a barrel-roll drill.

“I think it’s important to get them involved and to let them know what volleyball is, because I don’t think a lot of younger kids know,” Abbie Booth, a junior defensive specialist, said. “If they see us teaching them, it gets them more interested in playing and, therefore, they want to play in grade school and they continue in high school.”

Kym Pieper of Columbia brought her children Emily, 11,AS Roma shirt, Andrew, 9,Porto shirt, and Claire, 6, to the clinic and match.

“I think they did a great job of keeping the kids interested and involved,Ajax shirt,” Pieper said. “It was great. They seemed to have a lot of fun and I didn’t see anyone who wasn’t interested.”

“I think it gives our players a lot of satisfaction to know that the efforts they put in pays off too,” Kreklow said. “Doing the clinics is a great way for our girls to give back to the sport that has given them a lot of great opportunities and experiences.”

The team begins its season Friday against Utah in the Tiger Invitational.

Rock Bridge tennis defeats two more foes to remain undefeated

二月 27, 2012

COLUMBIA – Rock Bridge junior Eemaun Latifi has two sides.

Off the court,Benfica shirt, Latifi is one of the most talkative,Ajax shirt, easy-going members of the Rock Bridge tennis team and he’s always cracking jokes. During matches, he is fiery. Latifi is frequently yelling at himself to keep himself focused.

Saturday, the Bruins defeated Kirkwood 10-1 and Blue Valley North of Overland Park, Kan., 8-2 at Rock Bridge. Coach Ben Loeb called Latifi the star of the day. Latifi had four straight set victories,Peru football shirt, but the yelling was still there.

“If I tell myself to focus,Bayern Munich shirt, I think I’ll do better,” Latifi said. “When I don’t, I’ll play lackadaisical.”

Loeb is always telling his players to maintain positive energy and said sometimes Latifi gets down on himself too much.

Latifi, who played No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles Saturday, said he plays to the level of his competition too much. As a result, he has been in a lot of close matches this season, but he hasn’t shied away from the pressure.

“He’s so tough when it gets close,” Loeb said. “He gets mad rather than nervous.”

Latifi played on the Hickman tennis team two years ago to play doubles with his brother, Omeed, who is three years older than Eemaun. He transferred to Rock Bridge going into his sophomore year because he said most of his friends go there.

Overall, it was one of the best days of the season for the Bruins. Loeb called the match against Kirkwood in the morning the team’s best dual of the year. Kirkwood was without their No. 2 player, but is traditionally a contender for the state title.

Blue Valley North did not bring their top players because they just finished their Kansas district meet on Friday. However, the Mustangs did win both of the top two singles matches.

The Bruins’ (19-0) next match is against Jefferson City at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Rock Bridge.

Transfer will help basketball Tigers in all phases of the game

COLUMBIA — The MU basketball team is looking for ways to improve its defense. Why not put in a goalie to protect the rim?

He might not wear oversized leg pads and a helmet with a slick logo on it, but DeMarre Carroll is going to be the Tigers’ goalie in the 2007-08 season; at least in the eyes of his teammate, guard Keon Lawrence.

“Exactly like a goalie,Ajax shirt,” Lawrence said. “We were kind of soft at the rim last year, people got past our press and they could score easy. Get dunks and stuff. He ain’t gonna give none of that up.”

Coach Mike Anderson said he wants more blocked shots and better rebounding from the Tigers’ defense this season. Carroll appears to be a perfect fit. He snagged several rebounds and had a couple of big blocks during the team’s scrimmage at Mizzou Madness on Friday night.

It’s not just his defensive potential that has people buzzing about Carroll this preseason; it’s his talent as a whole. He was named the preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year by the league head coaches.

Carroll shrugs off the recognition as something that was given to him because of his play at Vanderbilt two seasons ago. After sitting out last season in accordance with the NCAA rules for an athlete who changes schools, Carroll just wants to get back into the action this season.

“I’m hungry,Inter Milan shirt,” he said. “And I ain’t talking about food.”

Carroll is a junior in terms of eligibility but that isn’t how he views his first season on the court with MU.

“The way I try to look at this year is that it is my senior year,” he said. “Because if I didn’t sit out last year this would be my senior year. I want to let them go out with a great year.”

The “them” Carroll is referring to is the Tigers’ seniors. The team has five seniors — guards Stefhon Hannah and Jason Horton, and forwards Marshall Brown, Vaidotas Volkus and Darryl Butterfield — Carroll said he wants to help send those seniors off with some great memories of their final year in college basketball.

“(I want to) make the tournament, and just win, that’s it,Wales football shirt,” he said.

His skills and experience should help the Tigers, but Anderson doesn’t want people putting too much hype into Carroll’s arrival on the court this season.

“He’s not going to be the savior,” Anderson said. “And I don’t even want him thinking that. All the preseason hype, that’s just somebody’s opinion. As I told him, you got to prove yourself day-in and day-out on this basketball court.”

Carroll is not merely a defensive specialist. He has already proven that he can score points on a consistent basis at the college level by averaging 10.9 points per game during his sophomore season at Vanderbilt.

Those points came in an offense that Carroll felt did not tailor to his style of play. He said that Vanderbilt used the Princeton offense, which is designed to slow the game down, and built around back door cuts to the basket.

“I like up-and-down tempo,” he said. “I like running and gunning, diving, jumping in the crowd. Letting all my emotions take place on the court.”

He believes that Missouri’s fast-paced style of play will take him back to what made him a Division I athlete in the first place.

“Here (at Missouri) I get to run and gun and really do what I did in high school,” Carroll said. “(I get to) block shots, dunk, do stuff like that.”

Carroll joins Brown and Leo Lyons as skilled forwards who can create problems for opposing defenses because of their size and athletic ability. Lyons said he and Carroll are excited about the possibility of being on the court at the same time.

“We talk about it every day,” Lyons said. “We’re kind of similar players, so we both can create mismatches. Whoever has the mismatch, that’s who we want to go to.”

Since Carroll has yet to play a game for the Tigers, most of the talk is about his preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year recognition. Carroll continually brushed off questions of the preseason award during the team’s media day, saying he cares more about team results than individual accomplishments.

“You can give me player of the year,” he said. “It don’t matter,Bayern Munich shirt, I’m just here to win. I’m not bigger than the team. I hope nobody on the team is bigger than the team. We just want to win.”

Scherzer waiting to finalize pro deal

二月 24, 2012

Seven months after being selected 11th overall by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2006 Major League Baseball draft, former Missouri pitcher Max Scherzer has yet to finalize a contract with the team. All but a handful of the players selected in the first round signed with their respective teams by August,Bayern Munich shirt, but Scherzer said he remains on good terms with the Diamondbacks organization and is hopeful a deal can be made before the start of spring training on March 1.

Scherzer attributed the delay to an injury he suffered during the 2006 season with Missouri, which raised some questions within the Diamondbacks organization. Scherzer developed biceps tendonitis early in the season, and twice took around two weeks off from pitching to address the problem.

He said he agreed with Arizonas request to be examined by an independent doctor this fall,Manchester City shirt, and was given a full medical clearance. At one point,Santos shirt, it was unclear whether Scherzer would need surgery to repair his arm and shoulder, but he said that his doctors now believe no surgery is needed.

Im ready to play ball whenever, and if they want me out there by spring training, then Ill be out by spring training, Scherzer said. Its kind of on them to see where this goes from here.

The delay of Scherzers contract may also relate to changes within the Diamondbacks organization. Former Director of Scouting Mike Rizzo had been with the organization for seven years before agreeing to become an assistant general manager with the Washington Nationals following the draft this summer. According to www.scout.com, Rizzo acted as the primary negotiator in drafting Scherzer, and his departure may have added to the complications.

Scherzer said that he has not talked directly to Arizona officials since being drafted,Ajax shirt, and instead has left all negotiations to his agent, Scott Boras. He said he has been given updates on the contracts progress by Boras on a weekly to monthly basis.

Postseason hopes help Tigers focus on KU

二月 21, 2012

,Newcastle United shirt

After their 35-24 loss to Kansas State on Nov. 6, many Missouri football players thought their preseason goals had evaporated.

The Tigers fell to 4-5, 2-4 in the Big 12 Conference with the loss, leaving little hope to win the North Division and reach the conference championship game. Even reaching a bowl game suddenly seemed daunting.

Second chance with the Border Showdown

But after Missouri watched a Saturday in the division unfold with a bye last week, the Tigers still have a chance to reach those goals, beginning with the Border Showdown against Kansas (3-7, 1-6) on Saturday.

“Well,Lazio shirt, it’s pretty remarkable first of all,” Missouri coach Gary Pinkel said. “It’s just one of those years that things are shaking out like they are… I really think this KU game is bigger than these other things that are involved. It’s a crazy year in our division, as you all know.”

Senior offensive lineman Scott Paffrath was just one of many dismayed Tigers after the Kansas State loss when he said that as a senior his goals were gone. But during the Tigers’ weekly media day on Monday, he seemed re-energized by Missouri’s new opportunity.

“I’d say it’s definitely interesting that somebody with a losing record in the Big 12 could win the Big 12 North,” Paffrath said. “If it happens, it happens. If it doesn’t, that’s our own fault.”

Still, Paffrath said the Kansas game has no extra meaning because of the Tigers’ bowl hopes. Instead, it comes down to Missouri against Kansas.

“I think it means more because it’s the Kansas rivalry,” he said. “That adds into it that we need a win,Ajax shirt, but this is the Kansas game. If we were both 0-9 or 0-8, I don’t think it would matter. I still think it’d be a good game and everybody would want to get after each other and that’s what’s going to happen.”

“Rivalry…goes beyond the football field”

Players and coaches on both sides of the game echoed Paffrath’s statements that this game is important even with both teams struggling.

Missouri’s senior guard Joe Gianino said the rivalry between the Tigers and Jayhawks goes beyond the football field.

“Well, the rivalry is always big,” Gianino said. “You can’t look at last year’s game. You can’t look at 10 years ago. This game has been passed down from generation to generation. So every year is separate and we got a responsibility.

“It’s a huge rivalry. If you look at it, it goes back to before us. It goes back to before football. It goes back to blood.”

Kansas’ sophomore offensive lineman Travis Dambach, a Jackson, Mo., native said he had little understanding of the rivalry until he reached Kansas.

But he soon learned of the historical importance of the game.

“It wasn’t until I got here and started talking to some of the people here that I learned what this rivalry means,” Dambach said. “One of our coaches has lived in Lawrence his whole life and told us how it goes beyond football, back to the Civil War.

“Until you hear that, you don’t realize the importance of this game.”

Pinkel and Kansas counterpart Mark Manginoalso realize the magnitude of the Border Showdown.

Mangino said the game is one of the best rivalries west of the Mississippi River and during his news conference Monday, Pinkel said the game against the Jayhawks is the biggest game on the Tigers’ schedule,Bordeaux shirt, even bigger than a possible bowl game.

“I’ll have a record here when I leave, what my KU record is going to be and it’ll be etched in granite and every player will, every single player will have his record versus KU and really no other team as much as that game, and that’s how big it is,” Pinkel said.

Athletics takes MU swimmer away from world of conflict

二月 20, 2012

COLUMBIA — It’s the middle of the night, and sergeant Gilad Kaufman, 20 at the time, of the 188th infantry battalion is standing guard in one of the watchtowers, looking out into the waves of grass surrounding the small village and military base in northern Israel.

Kaufman checks his binoculars and sees nothing, merely wooded area and grasslands, a scene he’s been protecting for hours.

Without warning, shots are fired at the base. In the distance Kaufman can see the small flashes coming out of the woodland.

He hears the bullets whiz by his head — enough warning to duck for cover. He finds safety in the watchtower, behind the small wall dividing him from the combatants.

He rises momentarily with his M-16, not knowing where, who or how many and fires instinctively into the distance.

“I didn’t think at all; I just shot. When someone is shooting at you, that’s what you do,” Kaufman said.

SWIMMING AT MU

In the middle of the afternoon, swimming practice is about to begin at the Mizzou Aquatics Center, and junior Gilad Kaufman, now 23, listens intently as coach Brian Hoffer gives instructions for the day and commentary about last weekend’s performance. The meeting ends, and Kaufman begins to congregate and joke with his teammates on the MU swimming and diving team.

Almost every group of players he approaches inevitably ends up laughing — with Kaufman as the instigator.

“He’s got a great sense of humor,” junior Byron Carlisle said.

Eventually, he reaches his swimming lane and dives in for a warm-up session. With a steady and smooth stroke,Ajax shirt, Kaufman works primarily on his freestyle and butterfly techniques, strokes that have brought him serious Big 12 and MU accolades. Kaufman swam the third leg of the 800 free relay team that broke the school record at the 2006 Big 12 Championship for the event.

THE FIREFIGHT ENDS

The combatants flee, and the two- to three-minute firefight comes to a halt. Kaufman and his comrades are sent to a room to be debriefed on the situation. Officers inform Kaufman the next morning that the combatants were most likely terrorists and that their exact numbers were unknown. All they tell him is that there was more than one. Kaufman, though, can only wonder what could have been. He suffers mentally from the crossfire long after the guns stopped firing.

“I had nightmares about the conflict for about a week and a half.”

The firefight in northern Israel is a fluke for Kaufman. His days are not usually that exciting, and his enemies are predominantly bartering landowners instead of camouflaged terrorists.

Kaufman works as a real estate marketer for the military, finding and negotiating for property around Israel. The Israeli Security Forces (ISF) use Kaufman’s skills in land speculation to build housing projects for officers. Kaufman only found himself in the firefight because while his primary job in the military is real estate, he and his battalion were regularly sent on security tours around the country which lasted from a week to a month. That particular tour was for two weeks.

The brief firefight is just one of many experiences for the Kaufman family. Born in Kfar Saba and raised in Netanya, both in central Israel, he grew up in a family with a strong military heritage. His grandfather, a Holocaust survivor, earned a medal of bravery for guiding his troops through a minefield. His father fought in several conflicts, and his older brother was a tank operator, a highly respected position in the Israeli army. Kaufman’s chances of reaching such heights in the military are limited,Werder Bremen shirt, though.

His position in the general infantry rarely puts him in conflict situations, something about his duty he has no choice but to accept.

“Yeah, security was a bit boring, but sometimes you realize where you could be (fighting in combat), and it’s not that bad,” he said.

A “BREAKOUT SEASON”

“His first year was all right. His second was much better, but I think this is the year he really breaks out,” Missouri coach Hoffer said.

The 2007 season started off well for the Tigers with Kaufman performing at a high level. Swimming as the third leg, Kaufman played a crucial part in the first-place finish of the 400 freestyle relay event at the Big 12 Relays.

Performance hasn’t been the issue for Kaufman at MU, though. Life outside of the military complex gave Kaufman a big change. In Israel, Kaufman’s daily routine was regimented: swimming practice before work, work and swimming practice after work. His time at MU is distinctly less crowded. Besides practice and class, Kaufman decides what to do instead of listening to a higher-ranking military officer.

“You’re on your own routine, and it’s much less strict,” he said. “Everything is organized and coaches take care of you.”

A SACRIFICE FOR SWIMMING

He knows he belongs in the Elite Forces — the Israeli equivalent of the Marines. That’s where his friends are. That’s where his family had made its service the stories of heroes,Porto shirt, but that’s exactly where he isn’t. Kaufman’s talent precludes him from doing as such. Because he is an athlete, joining the Elite Forces is not an option for Kaufman.

“The Elite Force is a full-time job, and sometimes you could be away for a week on a mission,” he said. “I would never have found time to swim.”

It would be impossible for Kaufman to continue swimming and competing if he were in the Elite Forces because of the time commitment.

“I could have chosen to (be in the elite unit). I wanted to, and if I wasn’t a swimmer, I would be a soldier,” he said.

Kaufman’s time in the general infantry is a trade-off.

“Swimming was very easy because it distracted me,” he said. “Physical pain is easier than mental pain.”

Swimming is not merely a hobby for Kaufman; it’s a sport in which he has excelled. He had already been named to the Israeli junior national team and netted three separate individual national championships for his country in 2002 and 2003.

“Everyone wants to go to America because of its the land of opportunity, and for me, it was a chance to swim and get an education for a job that would make me much more successful than in Israel,” he said.

Georgia Tech, Kenyon College (Ohio) and Missouri were his suitors. All three offered engineering programs, his desired major, and all three boasted strong swimming programs.

A NEW WORLD

As a junior, Kaufman can still readily see the differences between his old and new lives. No more monthly roadblocks in high-traffic areas. No more military tours in areas such as the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, and no more firefights.

The only hazardous condition he sees regularly is weather — and even that doesn’t faze him.

“When the tornado came a few years ago, I was walking down the street,” he said. “I mean, it wasn’t a big deal.”

A “FAMILY-LIKE” ATMOSPHERE

A year away from his release from the military, Kaufman decided once more to choose swimming over military service. He wanted to go to America to swim but choosing a college was difficult. Netanya is a city that practices kibbutz, an Israeli collectivism mind-set that emphasizes a form of socialism and community.

Kibbutz stresses family and communal well being, and only one of his three potential schools offered a relatively similar environment.

“Missouri offered a family-like atmosphere, something I was looking for in a school,” he said.

His three-year military almost finished, Kaufman had decided where his new home would be. He had plans to leave for Missouri almost immediately after he was released and start a new life in America. Two weeks after that release, he found himself in Columbia, 6,466 miles away from his home and his battalion. A new world presented itself to Kaufman, a world he was willing to acclimate to.

His choices had taken him this far, and even on retrospection,Kaizer Chiefs shirt, he felt comfortable with them.

“Sometimes I think about what it would have been like (in the army),” he said, “but I feel OK with my choice of coming here.”

MU Linebacker Alexander to have surgery for torn ACL

二月 19, 2012

COLUMBIA — Senior linebacker Van Alexander has been through this before.

It was announced Thursday that the injury to Alexander’s right knee during Tuesday’s practice was not a sprain,Ajax shirt, as was initially thought,Italy football shirt, but a torn ACL. The injury is one of several Alexander has suffered over the course of his career with the Missouri football team. Alexander suffered a sprained foot in the spring before his freshman season that required surgery and a groin injury which hampered him throughout his sophomore campaign.

“I really feel bad for him because he’s been through it,” Missouri coach Gary Pinkel said. “But he’s tough. He’s a tough guy and it’s going to take a great deal of rehab but he’s good enough to do it and the good news is he can be 100 percent by Illinois, 100 percent by the opening game and he will be.”

Pinkel said Alexander will have surgery on Monday.

The injury is a blow to a linebacking corps already severely lacking depth. Junior Sean Weatherspoon and senior Brock Christopher are the only linebackers remaining that have started more than one game.

“It hurts us a lot,” Weatherspoon said. “It really hurts the chemistry of the defense.”

But like his coach, Weatherspoon remained confident in Alexander’s work ethic.

“I’m pretty sure Van’s going to put in the work with rehab and everything to get back on the field at least by the second week of the season and maybe by the first week,l.a.galaxy shirt,” Weatherspoon said. “It does kind of mix up the chemistry, but it does give (sophomore linebacker) Luke Lambert an opportunity to step up,Juventus shirt, so he can feel comfortable with the No. 1 defense.”

Weatherspoon said he also thinks Alexander’s positive outlook will benefit his recovery.

“If you know Van he’s a crazy guy,” Weatherspoon said. “He’s always cracking jokes and making people laugh, and I didn’t see any change in him today. He’s always here for the team.”

WIDE RECEIVERS IMPROVING: The Missouri offense lost several key contributors from last season including tight end Martin Rucker and wide receivers Will Franklin, Jason Ray and Greg Bracey, who all saw significant playing time.

But quarterback Chase Daniel has been impressed with the new group’s performance thus far this spring.

“You look at Jeremy Maclin and he’s obviously getting a whole lot better,” Daniel said. “And Forrest Shock has really stood out too. Tommy (Saunders) has really made some plays, and Jared Perry especially when you look at him and what he’s been able to do, and we got a pretty good receiving corps.”

Focus on getting stronger in each and every workout or escalating the amount of reps that you do. The Progressive Overload principle indicates to train with progressively heavier weights over time so as to keep away from hitting a plateau.

For instance, if you have been lifting exactly the same quantity of weight for the past three months on the bench press, then you’ve in all probability hit a plateau, which means that in an effort to continue obtaining bigger and stronger, you will need to either get stronger on the bench press or do a few extra repetitions than you did the last time you performed the bench press.
