Missouri football team prepares for Texas Tech

三月 4, 2012

COLUMBIA It’s just one loss,Bordeaux shirt, but Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel is taking it pretty hard.

“We’re not playing our best, offensively or defensively,” Pinkel said Monday at Missouri’s weekly media day. “It’s my job to get our football team to play better than that, off the bat, and I didn’t do a very good job.”

Missouri will now try to bounce back from the 31-17 loss to Nebraska. The Tigers (7-1, 3-1 Big 12) face Texas Tech on Saturday in a nationally-televised, prime-time road game.

INJURY REPORT

Pinkel announced that middle linebacker Luke Lambert, who has a sprained right knee, will miss his third-straight game.

Lambert is expected to be the only Tiger out for the Texas Tech game. But that’s not to say that the Tigers are in perfect health.

“When you play the schedule we have played and are going to play, you are going to have some guys with bumps and bruises,” Pinkel said.

Quarterback Blaine Gabbert sustained a bushel of big Cornhusker hits this past Saturday in Nebraska, raising suspicion that he might have sustained a concussion during the game. But Pinkel didn’t see any reason to be concerned about Gabbert’s health.

“I don’t know what you are talking about.. he seemed fine to me,” Pinkel said. “He took some hits, it’s a tough business.”

UNDER REVIEW

One big hit on Gabbert will be receiving extra scrutiny this week, after Pinkel asked the Big 12 to review of a fourth quarter play in which Nebraska safety Courtney Osbourne hit Gabbert helmet-to-helmet.

Nebraska linebacker Eric Martin was suspended from the Missouri game for a helmet-to-helmet hit the week before.

Pinkel claimed that his intentions in asking for a review were not vengeful,South Africa football shirt, but rather educational.

“It’s very important for us in teaching our players, our defensive players and everybody, how they are going to call it, how they are going to interpret it,Bayern Munich shirt,” Pinkel said. “We don’t always agree with officiating, never will, never have. But they do a good job, and the communication, I think, is really good.”

WHICH QB?

Although Pinkel knows who his starting quarterback will be Saturday, he does not know who he will be preparing to face in Lubbock. Texas Tech has used two different quarterbacks this season. Both Taylor Potts and Steven Sheffield received playing time in the Red Raiders’ loss to Texas A&M last week.

“I don’t think you can really be concerned about that,Atletico Madrid shirt,” Pinkel said. “We look more at the scheme that they play and what they do.”

Kansas State defying expectations

三月 1, 2012

COLUMBIA — The Kansas State women’s basketball team began the season with relatively modest expectations.

They were coming off an 11th place conference finish and 4-12 Big 12 record and predicted to finish eighth in the conference in the Big 12 coaches preseason poll.

And after an 8-5 run through a tough non-conference schedule those predictions and expectations looked to be right on target.

Instead the No. 17 Wildcats have rolled through Big 12 play and are in the driver’s seat for a conference title with a 9-1 record and sole possession of first place. The Wildcats’ success has surprised the coaches that picked them to finish in the bottom half of the conference,Manchester City shirt, and even their own head coach.

“I could never have imagined that at this stage in Big 12 play we would be 9-1,” Wildcats coach Deb Patterson said. “I think it’s been a wonderful ride for us, and at the same time there’s no way I could have expected it.”

The Wildcats have become the top team in the conference without the overwhelming individual performances players like Oklahoma center Courtney Paris or Oklahoma State point guard Andrea Riley bring. The Wildcats not only lead the Big 12 in assists and assist to turnover ratio,Sevilla shirt, but they’ve been solid everywhere else.

“We’re not that dominant roster that Oklahoma brings to the floor,” Patterson said. “We’re just going to have to work and play well to win a basketball game. It doesn’t matter who we’re lined up against, we’re going to be challenged.”

While the Wildcats don’t have anyone in the race for Big 12 Player of the Year, they have gotten strong performances from Kimberly Dietz, junior forward Marlies Gipson and junior point guard Shalee Lehning. Dietz is the Wildcats’ leading scorer (15.4 ppg) and has emerged as a strong leader for KSU. Patterson has been especially pleased with Dietz’s eagerness to step forward and score when the Wildcats need a basket.

“She’s wanted the responsibility when times are tough to make the play,” Patterson said. “Coaches can call your number and ask you to try to make a play, but when you’re on the floor and you want to make the play it changes everything. That’s really what Kimberly’s brought this year. She wants to make the play, she wants the responsibility, when her team is in need, to be a factor.”

That mentality hasn’t always been there for Dietz. It has come as she matured from a freshman who was trying to figure out her role to one of three seniors on a team competing for a conference championship.

“It’s probably just my experience,” Dietz said. “I kind of know the ins and outs of Big 12 basketball.”

Lehning is the player who is mainly responsible for the Wildcats having the most assists and best assist to turnover ratio in the conference. She easily leads the Big 12 in assists with 6.3 per game — all others average less than five — and she also scores just over 10 points and grabs seven rebounds per game. It’s that well-rounded stat line that makes Patterson consider her to be one of the best guards in the country.

“She’s a throwback,” Patterson said. “Lehning I think just gives us a chance to be good.”

On the frontline, Gipson recovered from a knee injury that ended her 2006-2007 season after 16 games and is fourth in the conference in field goal percentage (54.5 %) and leads the Wildcats with 8.3 rebounds per game. While her statistics show her impact,Santos shirt, Patterson is especially impressed with her intelligence on the court and her ability to run the defense on the floor.

“She’s kind of like Mike Singletary or a great middle linebacker, somebody that just sees things, communicates it and keeps you really solid in your defense,” Patterson said.

The Tigers have reason to be encouraged that they’ll be able to play with the conference leaders. The Tigers played well in their last two games at Mizzou Arena and almost came up with wins against Nebraska and No. 10 Oklahoma. MU let a 10-point lead with five and a half minutes to play slip away against the Huskers and was tied late with the high-powered Sooners.

“It made us realize that we can play to that level and we can play to that level all the time, not just with spurts all the time,Atletico Madrid shirt,” freshman forward Shakara Jones said.

While MU’s last two home performances serve as warnings to the Wildcats, they aren’t necessary because KSU can’t afford to overlook any team.

“It’s not hard at all for us, it’s not our nature to think anyone we’re going to play is an easy game,” Patterson said. “There’s no such thing for us.”

Injuries no excuse for Missouris Pinkel

COLUMBIA In preseason practices, the offense and defense compete in scrimmages to wear the black jerseys. But more and more Tigers are wearing a less-coveted jersey as preseason camp progresses.

On Friday, seven players wore the red jerseys of an injured player, keeping them off the practice field and making injuries an unwanted distraction at Devine Pavilion 13 days before the Tigers’ Sept. 4 game against Illinois.

The injuries have hit in the wide receiver position the hardest. Jerrell Jackson, the team’s top receiver coming into 2010, broke a bone in his wrist on Aug. 11. The injury required surgery to insert a screw into the scaphoid bone, and the Houston native will likely be out for the majority of Missouri’s nonconference schedule.

Two of Jackson’s backups in his slot wide receiver position,Retro Football Shirts, redshirt freshman Kerwin Sticker and true freshman Jimmie Hunt, also wore red jerseys on Friday.

Missouri started practices this summer with bevy of young, talented, but ultimately untested wide receivers. But injuries to three of the four slot wide receivers is forcing competition and giving freshman an opportunity to earn playing time.

Since the injury to Jackson, freshman wide receiver Bud Sasser has impressed at both the outside and slot wide receiver positions, and redshirt freshman receiver L’Damian Washington has supplanted Rolandis Woodland as the Tigers’ primary big-play receiver.

“There’s a lot of competition. What they’re trying to do, they’re trying to work through this and fight through this whole thing,Lazio shirt,” Missouri coach Gary Pinkel said.

Now,Valencia shirt, Pinkel would certainly prefer to not have the injuries to talented players, but he sees the upside to the predicament.

“Can you raise yourself above where (you’re) one of the top-three (you’re) one of the top-six, to get yourself in at two-deep (on the depth chart),” Pinkel said. “That competition is really good. We have two freshmen (Sasser and Washington) who are doing really well, and we’ll see how that comes out.”

Another position of depth for the Tigers has been hit hard by injuries as well. The Tigers started the preseason with five ready-to-start linebackers, but a season-ending knee injury to outside linebacker Donovan Bonner and a pesky hamstring injury to middle linebacker Will Ebner has stretched the linebacking core thin.

While the Tigers’ wide receivers have more opportunities to play, the linebackers are struggling to fill the voids left by Bonner and Ebner.

“We need Ebner back,” Pinkel said. “He’s an emotional leader. He’s a guy who makes hits, creates plays. All the things that he creates out therethat cranks up enthusiasm.”

But football is a violent game, and injuries are as much a part of a season as touchdowns and turnovers. Pinkel refuses to compare the injuries in 2010 to any other season he’s been in charge at Missouri.

“Honestly, one thing I have never, ever done is get caught up in injuries,” Pinkel said. “I just don’t do it.

“Nobody cares. Bottom line, they’re not going to asterisk a game or season.”

“‘Well, if Blaine wouldn’t have gotten hurt last year, we could have won two more games,’” Pinkel said sarcastically. “Bottom line, you got to play through it. No excuses.”

Rock Bridge football coach strives to go beyond Xs and Os

二月 24, 2012

COLUMBIA He stands on the sidelines, watching his first-string offense run against a scout team defense with his arms crossed over his chest. A white hooded sweatshirt the size of a parachute covers his upper body, draped over shoulders that resemble bowling balls. The hood is pulled low over his face, barely allowing his eyes to see out. He paces the sidelines of Rock Bridges practice field, each step calculated, his Nikes punishing the field turf.

A.J. Ofodiles offense methodically moves the ball down field with as much organization as a Navy SEAL unit. No movement is wasted. Assistants buzz around the field, pointing out minor but important adjustments between each snap. The ball rarely touches the ground, but when it does, its scooped up as quickly as open parking spaces at the mall on Black Friday.

This is how it works for Ofodile. He watches with Zen-like concentration and calm as his quarterback lofts a deep ball down the sideline. A dropped pass in the end zone merely elicits a raised brow.

“Come on now, lets focus,” he says, clapping his hands.

Ofodile is in his seventh year as the head football coach at Rock Bridge High School. During the school days, he works to update his strength and conditioning courses in the physical education department at the school where he cracks up coworkers at department meetings. As coach, he also hounds counselors and teachers on his players performance off the field.

After the final bell, Ofodile transforms and can be as intense as a wolf chasing his prey. Besides the Bruins’ next victory, the coach is passionate about producing quality human beings with strong work ethics. During his playing days (four years for Missouri and six years in the NFL), Ofodile says he learned about hard work, and dedication is what he tries to instill in his players. To explain its importance, he will tell you about a place 650 miles north of this field in Columbia at a hill in his hometown of Detroit.

For the last 50 years, Derby Hill has hosted the Detroit City Soap Box Derby. For a few years in the 90s, Derby Hill also hosted informal but intense summer workouts for a group of college football players. Ofodile and Missouri strength and conditioning coach Pat Ivey spent some of their breaks from the Tigers football team on this hill, about a mile from Iveys house. The two would jog there every day as a warmup and meet up with other players from the Detroit area that attended schools such as Western Michigan, Central Michigan and Michigan State for grueling sprint sessions up the hill.

“It was a crazy routine. It taught me the responsibility necessary to be successful,” Ofodile said. “It showed me that to gain ground on everybody else you could never rest. I probably never shouldve spent a minute in the NFL talent wise. But those workouts put me above the rest. Good players are good because they work. My whole playing career Ive been around people with a strong belief in working.”

With no coaches around, the intensity of the workouts was up to the player. Ivey and Ofodile, who suited up together for Cass Technical High School in Detroit and were roommates at MU, helped propel each other up the hill.

“We pushed each other. It made it easy to go to work when you had someone like that with you, in your ear the whole time,” Ivey said. “He (Ofodile) definitely knows talent as well. He has a good blend of knowing how to work and having talent.”

That blend has helped numerous Bruins earn Division I football scholarships. Georgia backup quarterback Logan Gray and Georgia starting tight end Aron White played for Ofodile. This year, the Bruins feature two Division I recruits in Trey Millard, who has choosen Oklahoma,Birmingham shirt, and Chase Rome, who had planned to attend Oklahoma State before changing his mind and choosing Nebraska. Without Ofodile, their football futures would be less defined.

“Hes tremendous. Hes really picky about details which can get kind of annoying, but its the reason where I am today,” said Rome, a 6-foot-3, 275-pound defensive end. “He holds me to a higher standard in academics and football. Some kids want to play football to wear the jersey and get the ladies,Lazio shirt, but its not about that. Coach Ofodile keeps the focus on what we need to do to win games.”

At Rock Bridge, Ofodile wraps up practice. Coming off an emotional victory over rival Hickman, he stresses the importance of focus, not riding too high on achievements and approaching every game like its the Providence Bowl regardless of opponent. Onlookers would think Ofodile was a hypnotist. He has his players complete attention, eyes locked on the coach as if they were seeing a Victorias Secret fashion show.

Aside from his extensive football experience, Ofodile strives to make an impression on his players that goes beyond the Xs and Os. While drills and sprints are stressed, his players appreciate the benefits that spill into other areas of their lives besides athletics.

“As far as football, the terminology and the way we run practice helps give me an idea what to expect next year,” Millard said. “Coach Ofodile has taught me to give 100 percent in everything I do, to not quit on something just because I dont enjoy it.”

This includes academics. To do this, Ofodile checks with his players guidance counselors often, making sure theyre making grades and setting examples for the rest of Rock Bridge. If problems arise, Ofodile is the first to respond. Not because people expect him to, but because he wants to. As a former football player, Ofodile understands that an entire school community looks up to football players, respects them and emulates their decisions.

Jennifer Mast, the athletic director at Rock Bridge,Atletico Madrid shirt, says she appreciates Ofodile’s well-rounded approach.

“He (Ofodile) is one of the best coaches weve ever had as far as staying on top of his kids and really knowing his kids,” Mast said. “Hes great with our teachers and counselors. The stereotype is that football coaches are only here for wins, but he never hesitates to help someone out whether theyre on the team or not.”

Ofodile does more than just pursue his coworkers for answers. One minute he may be grilling a teacher for a test score. The next, he will have that same teacher doubled over, shaking with laughter. Vicki Reimler,Napoli shirt, a coworker in the physical education department at Rock Bridge, witnesses Ofodiles humor on a first-hand basis. Beyond his serious demeanor lies a funny, witty side of Ofodile that keeps coworkers on their toes.

“A couple weeks ago at a department meeting, he was telling us some stories. I dont even remember what they were about because I was too busy laughing. By the time we left everyones sides and cheeks hurt because we were laughing so hard,” Reimler said. “Every now and then, hell throw a zinger and just crack you up.”

Relationships are the backbone of Ofodile’s program. While he wants his players to score touchdowns and grab interceptions, Ofodile also wants his players to have a scope on life beyond the Friday lights. Its a simple formula. If players feel like their coaches care about them, they will do anything for the man with the whistle. Those relationships mean stressing blitz packages as equally as world history. Those relationships represent the difference between wide receivers pulling up instead of laying out for an overthrown ball, running backs tiptoeing through a hole instead of driving through it like a truck.

“We want our kids to know there are things more important in life than wins and losses. We want to make sure things are still fun for them,” Ofodile said. “Players enthusiasm comes from these relationships.”

Utility player becoming leader for Missouri baseball team

“Ive got one of those voices that you can recognize from about a mile away,” Nicholas said.

Nicholas, a junior utility player on the Missouri baseball team, doesnt use his voice to annoy his teammates, he uses it to encourage them.

During a scrimmage Thursday at Taylor Stadium, everyone on the field could hear Nicholas distinct voice screaming,Italy football shirt, “Lets go Jersey!” in support of Jesse Santo, and “Here we go Plackie!” giving encouragement to Andreas Plackis.

Santo and Plackis were playing on the other team, but Nicholas didnt care. Nicholas said he hopes his teammates appreciate what he does.

“Id like to think that they think of me as a hard worker and a leader,” Nicholas said. “Someone who is always going out there giving 100 percent no matter what the score is.”

Nicholas transferred to MU from a junior college in Arizona. He played his freshman year at Gonzaga where he was put in left field with little hope of trying different positions. So he left the Bulldogs to seek a better experience.

Nicholas dream is to be a professional ballplayer, not an announcer,Peru football shirt, even though he has the voice for it. Nicholas said he felt like his skill set was better suited for a catcher and part-time infielder. He knew he would have to forfeit a year of playing Division I baseball, but he was willing to make the sacrifice.

Coach Tim Jamieson said his first impression of Nicholas was that he was very mature and knew what he wanted.

“He has a plan,” Jamieson said. “He has a vision. He wasnt going to be able to accomplish it where he was, so he wasnt afraid to go backwards a step to go where he wanted to go.”

Nicholas continues to make an impression with his support of his teammates, but Jamieson said the real statement he has made is with his bat. Nicholas has hit so well that Jamieson has made him the clubs cleanup hitter.

“I think hes a guy that obviously likes to be involved in pressure situations,” Jamieson said. “Hes someone whos has earned the respect of his teammates, even though hes been here less than a year.”

Nicholas credits his maturity to his ability to keep his emotions in check. He said he doesnt want it to sound sexist, but he thinks that living with his mother and two sisters helped him gain some perspective.

Nicholas said he knows he has to stay level-headed approaching Missouri’s first Big 12 Conference home series. The Tigers are set to play Baylor beginning at 6 p.m., Friday at Taylor Stadium.

“Im pretty anxious for it,” Nicholas said. “Im excited to see how our fans respond to the crowd that we went to last weekend at A&M.”

Catcher Ryan Ampleman said he and Nicholas get along great. Ampleman enjoys Nicholas constant talking and said Nicholas is always doing something positive.

Ampleman said he knows Nicholas wont have any problem adjusting to Big 12 play offensively. He said the main thing Nicholas should concentrate on is his job behind the plate where they will likely split time this weekend.

“Weve talked,Valencia shirt,” Ampleman said. “When youre playing, obviously the intensity gets higher with the talent with the Big 12. Really, just being able to handle the pitchers is the one thing hes going to nail down.”

Nicholas ability to play different positions shows his versatility as player. Jamieson said Nicholas’ versatile personality is good for the sport.

“In baseball, youve got to be intense yet laid back,” Jamieson said. “And hes got that. He has great focus, but hes also able to relax.”

Tiger Tipoff- Senior guard leads MU womens basketball with emotion

二月 10, 2012

COLUMBIA RaeShara Brown stands at 5-foot-8, making her the second-shortest player on the Missouri women’s basketball team behind sophomore Trenee Thornton. Her voice is the loudest on the court, though, often drowning out that of coach Robin Pingeton’s. While she was a strong contributer last season, Brown has tried to step up into the role of a leader on the team.

“I just try to learn how to communicate and lead my teammates in a positive manner, learn how to encourage and be uplifting, more so than using constructive criticism,” Brown said. “A lot of times,Atletico Madrid shirt, D-1 athletes are already hard enough on themselves, so by us being able to lift each other and encourage each other when things are going wrong, it makes the games go a lot smoother.”

Brown’s positive attitude translates on the court. The senior guard leads Missouri with 16 points per game. She has accumulated 41 steals in the Tigers’ 16 games, 27 more than any other player. But one stat stands out. The second-shortest player to wear the Tiger uniform this season leads the team with 6.6 rebounds per game.

While Brown improved on every statistic from last season, she focused most on developing into a strong leader this past off season.

“I think some people have it in them, and I think some people don’t. I’d like to think that I have a strong voice,” Brown said. “When people see me work, I think it makes them want to work hard,Villareal shirt, too. It’s just us pushing each other, and it’s the message we try to get across. Being a leader, it’s just a part of making people want to follow. I have to make the right actions when leading.”

Missouri coach Robin Pingeton looks highly upon the senior. Because Brown has been at MU three more years than Pingeton, the coach relies on her to carry the new coaching staff’s message on the court, saying Brown’s buy-in from day one has been outstanding.

“Shes a young lady that impacts a lot of people. Her body language has gotten so much better. Shes a fighter,” Pingeton said. “Sometimes we remind her, shes one of those players that needs to take a deep breath and make sure shes embracing and encouraging her teammates.”

Brown gives credit to the first-year coaching staff that came to Missouri from Illinois State for her continued success. According to the senior guard, the transition in coaching staffs this past off season was seamless.

“I can’t think of a hard time we had adjusting to the new coaching staff,” Brown said. “Of course we had to take time to learn what their expectations were and what they demanded of us,Ajax shirt, but as far as just embracing them and them coming in and making it easier to actually be a family, it wasn’t a big mess with that part of it.”

A smooth adjustment for the Tigers led to a conference-opening win over Texas. Missouri made a 12-0 run in the final three minutes of regulation to send the game to overtime. Brown scored a career-high 27 points that also led the team. The Tigers were unable to hold on to an eight-point halftime lead over Texas Tech, though.

“That win against Texas makes us want more of that, which has pushed us to work even harder,” Brown said. “And to know that we came so close against Texas Tech and weren’t able to finish I think put a bigger chip on our shoulder, and we don’t want any more (games) to slip away like that.”

Playing in her final year, Brown wants continue building on her leadership role by implementing positive thinking,Celtic shirt, both on and off the court. She attributes some of her growth to playing in the Big 12 conference, which has six teams in the USA Today poll’s top 30.

“It’s what the Big 12 is all about. When you get a little taste of something different every year, you learn how to intensify. You learn how much passion you have to play with,” Brown said. “When I’m working on my game, I’m just constantly thinking about the Big 12.”

Tigers a “work in progress” but win exhibition opener

二月 4, 2012

COLUMBIA Cindy Stein put her “work in progress” on display for the first time Friday night.

The coach of Missouri women’s basketball team watched her team defeat Division II Southwest Baptist University 80-50 in an exhibition game at Mizzou Arena, but she said the Tigers have a long list of things to work on.

Despite a decided size advantage no player taller than 6-feet tall stepped onto the floor for Southwest Baptist Missouri out-rebounded the Bearcats by just a 43-34 margin and launched 20 3-pointers in the game,Wales football shirt, making five of them.

“I was a little disappointed in some shot selection. I
thought we were trying to shoot too quick,” said Stein, who asked her team to get the ball inside more.

Stein said she thought her team was nervous about playing in front of a crowd for the first time this season, especially the freshmen members.

“The first couple minutes we were running our routes so hard and quick that we didnt even have time to pass it,” Stein said, “and defensively we were kind of chasing there and over-running our kids and a lot of that is nerves because weve actually been doing a pretty good job in practice on those things.”

Missouri got off to slow starts in both halves. Midway through the first half, the Tigers led just 18-16 before racing to 40-23 halftime lead.

Then, after scoring just 12 points in the first 10 minutes of the second half, Missouri scored 28 points in the game’s final 10 minutes.

Senior guard Alyssa Hollins, who made nine of her 18 shot attempts and led the team with 21 points,Lazio shirt, said the slow starts revealed a positive for the team.

“I thought weve got a lot of work to do, but we came out with a lot of energy and we responded to coach a lot of times, and thats a good sign when you can respond when we need to change situations,” Hollins said. “We had a couple of lulls and she would call timeout,Atletico Madrid shirt, and I felt like we picked it up and we made some adjustments.”

Junior Jessra Johnson scored 17 points and had seven rebounds while sophomore Shakara Jones added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Missouri’s bench, which includes four true freshmen, scored just 17 points in the game, something Stein said she thinks will improve as the season progresses.

“I think youre going to see our freshmen get a lot better,Inter Milan shirt,” she said. “Our freshmen were very nervous tonight, and I think youre going to see them get a lot more playing time than that.”

Missouri begins regular season play against South Dakota State at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Mizzou Arena.

Alumni return for final lap

一月 27, 2012

John Putnam and Paulus Lawson were there when the MU Natatorium opened in 1964. On Saturday, they were there at its last event.

Putnam and Lawson were part of the first Missouri team to swim in the pool in 1964. So they swam the last race on Saturday as the Missouri swimming and diving program said goodbye to the place it has called home for the past 40 years.

“The Last Lap at the Nat” brought together many Tiger alumni.

It featured 50-year-old men defeating swimmers half their age,Celtic shirt, and got many reacquainted with old friends and former teammates.

“This is important to me because I get to see people I haven’t seen in 20 years,” said Julie Merrill, who was an All-American at Missouri in the late 1970s and early 1980s. “But they still are my friends and we will always have that special bond because we worked so hard together.”

The event also helped the swimming program connect with its alumni. Tim Boyle, a Missouri swimmer in the ‘70s who helped set up the event, said that alumni support is extremely important in a non-revenue sport.

“The budget is limited so we need the support of the alumni,” he said. “Everyone here was changed by his/her swimming experience at Missouri, and we need to make sure that the swimmers of today have the resources so that they can have that same experience.”

The program has made progress recently staying in touch with its alumni.

A couple of years ago, men’s and women’s coach Brian Hoffer created Tigers Pride, a booster’s club.

Boyle created a Web site that lists the rosters of all the Missouri swimming teams with e-mail addresses for each swimmer.

The site helped produce Saturday’s event, one that Hoffer said is important for the program.

“It is a reconnection to the past and an opportunity to bridge different generations,” he said. “We need the support as we make the transition to hopefully get to the next level.”

To get to the next level,Paris Saint Germain shirt, the program needed to get a new state-of-the-art facility,Atletico Madrid shirt, which it will have in June at the Student Recreation Center.

Still under construction, the new Olympic-size pool and diving area will give the team a better training facility. It will have eight lanes instead of the six at the Natatorium, allowing more swimmers to practice at one time.

It will also include a platform diving board and diving dry land equipment, such as trampolines, mats and belts to help improve the divers’ technique.

All the improvements should help bring in better recruits,AS Roma shirt, so the team can compete with powerhouses like Texas and Texas A&M.

“Many people came here in my first years of coaching because of the facility we had,” said Joe Goldfarb, who coached the Missouri swimming and diving team from 1965-1989. “So the same will probably happen now.”

The new facility was made possible by Recreation Services and the students at MU. The students voted on a referendum in 2001 that would increase the MU student fees to help build a new recreational center and pool.

The majority of students, 65 percent, voted for the highest student fee increase to build a new recreational center.

No one was more pleased about that outcome than Hoffer.

“None of this would have ever happened without the students, and I am so pleased that they voted for this and have helped our program progress.”
