Why Choose Aerobic Exercises Over Diets

三月 8, 2012

Many studies say that aerobic exercises are not recommended because these cannot fully pave the way for permanent weight loss and weight control. However, there are studies that also show that aerobics can bring some short-term benefits like being a powerful motivator, not only in losing weight but also in living healthy for good.

While some physicians say that it is okay to diet for a fast weight loss if the person’s health wouldn’t be compromised or affected, with aerobic exercises,Wales football shirt, there is no need to worry since the person will more or less dictate the phase of the process.

Weight loss through diet can be effective if it’s only used for initial weight loss because this can lead to having balanced diet. But,Villareal shirt, weight loss through aerobic exercises can ensure that you don’t only follow a reasonable eating plan but you also have a regular activity so that you would not regain the weight that you lost.

Although some weight loss strategies are effective,Lyon shirt, it still doesn’t change the fact that engaging into it without preparation is hazardous to health. Unlike when you engage in aerobic exercise where you don’t only have the chance to lose weight but you can also improve the conditions of your heart and lungs through the proper utilization of oxygen in the body.

Boosting the potentials of aerobics in controlling weight

But even with aerobic exercise, there are still factors that will keep you from controlling your weight. Two of the reasons why people become obese are emotional eating and their inability to keep doing an activity such as aerobic exercise on a regular basis. Some of the key factors that trigger emotional eating and the lost of interest in controlling weight include anger, depression, and anxiety that lead to eating more food and being lax when it comes to physical activities.

Experts say that if a person can manage emotional eating by learning to deal with their emotions in a different way, the possibility of achieving weight loss in no time will be greater. Here are some tips in combating emotional eating and the sudden loss of interest in controlling weight:

1. It pays to determine your own mood especially before eating. Doing this will give you a mindset that eating is just an escape so that you can forget whatever is bothering you.

2. Analyze and monitor your emotions daily. Checking your emotional levels daily can help you trace the reasons why you indulge in emotional eating and why you lose the drive to go on with your aerobic exercise. This can also help you fight the urge to overeat when you get emotionally upset.

3. Try to develop new hobbies that will take your mind off from eating food or by being lazy. By keeping yourself busy with other things, you can avoid eating large amount of food on a regular basis.

4. Make simple aerobic exercises such as walking or jogging regularly. Physical exertions can help your body burn unnecessary and unwanted calories. Thus,Bayern Munich shirt, this can help you control your weight in no time.

Late-inning outburst-dooms delayed Tigers

Late-inning outburst
dooms delayed Tigers

Steve McCown emerged from the umpires’ locker room and sauntered out onto University Field.

He took his position a few feet behind third base, his legs straddling the baseline. McCown adjusted his cap and slid his feet across the dirt.

He was ready.

Too bad the players, stadium workers, those 465 in attendance and his two fellow umpires had been waiting for McCown for 90 minutes.

Travel complications had delayed his arrival.

Saturday’s game between No. 16 Missouri and No. 9 Oklahoma, an 8-3 Sooner victory,Bayern Munich shirt, was scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. The start was first pushed back to 2:30. Then it was 3:15.

Before the game officially began at 3:30,Manchester City shirt, the crowd sarcastically applauded the umpire’s arrival.

Missouri players treated the delay casually.

“We did as much as we could to not think about it,” center fielder Leanne Bowers said. “We did a little stretching and lied down in the dugout for awhile.”

Some fans wandered over to the Missouri Relays track meet at adjoining Walton Stadium in the interim. Many stayed in their seats and talked.

“The nice thing is we had an absolutely gorgeous day,” Missouri coach Ty Singleton said. “We’re at the ballpark. It’s kind of tough to beat the sun.”

The game had at first proved to be worth the wait for Missouri. The Tigers and Sooners were tied 2-2 entering the sixth inning before Missouri collapsed.

A six-run Oklahoma sixth put things out of reach for the Tigers, quickly transforming a close game into an OU runaway.

One play in particular spurred the Tigers’ demise. With one run in and none out, Oklahoma’s Kristin Vesely came to the plate with the bases loaded.

Missouri looked to be out of trouble when Vesely grounded back to pitcher Jen Bruck.

But Bruck threw wild to home plate,Inter Milan shirt, then forgot to cover when catcher Kathy Masterson tried to get an Oklahoma runner out.

Three runs scored and Vesely advanced to third. Oklahoma (35-6,Lyon shirt, 3-0 Big 12) sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning.

Saturday’s loss was the first at home for Missouri (27-5, 1-2) this season. It came on the heels of a 2-1 loss at Southern Illinois-Carbondale Thursday.

Despite the setback, the Tigers are off to the best start of any team in the 30-year history of Missouri softball.

The teams play again at noon today.

New routine helps Stephens roll past Mount Mary College

New routine helps
Stephens roll past
Mount Mary College

After a lackadaisical start to his team’s Tuesday night loss at Central Methodist, Stephens College basketball coach Dane Pavlovich thought the Stars needed a new warm-up to get ready to go at the beginning of each game.

The new warm-ups accomplished that purpose Saturday,Glasgow Rangers shirt, as Stephens jumped out to a 15-0 lead and cruised to an easy 88-19 victory against Mount Mary College,Lyon shirt, which arrived at Silverthorne Arena from Milwaukeewith only five players.

“(With) our warm-up before, we were doing a lot of stuff where we were standing,Kaizer Chiefs shirt,” junior captain Amy Burklund said. “We just wanted to add some things that we could individually add our own flair (to) and just get us going so we’ll get more ready and focused for the game.”

The Stars (4-15) also used a man-to-man full-court press in the first half to boost their intensity.

“We wanted to jump start a little momentum for us,” Pavlovich said. “At times we have the tendency to get lackadaisical and we didn’t want that from the beginning. We wanted to jump on them quick.”

Stephens forced the Blue Angels into 19 first half turnovers and held them to nine points in the first 20 minutes.

The Stars defense fueled its offense. All nine players scored in the first half.

“I loved the way we shared the basketball today,” Pavlovich said. “We really played together tonight. We had nine players working towards a very common task and doing something together.”

“It allowed (us) to work on some things,” Burklund said. “In the second half we wanted to focus on our offense and executing.”

Mount Mary (0-8), was outmanned.

“In the first half they kept up, but in the second half,Ajax shirt, they were pooped out,” coach Bernell Hooker said.

The victory opened up a three-game home stand for the Stars. Their next game is7 p.m. Monday against Avila.

“A lot of things that we did tonight I think we can take and learn from,” Burklund said. “(We can) take it into our next game.”

New catcher-keeps focus on defense

New catcher
keeps focus on defense

When the Hickman baseball team takes the field a familiar name appears on the lineup at catcher: Steponovich. Only now, Bart Steponovich has taken the place of his older brother, Nick Steponovich.

Bart Steponovich squatted behind the plate at practice Monday, holding his catcher’s mitt out as a target for his pitchers. Most of the pitches would hit the glove with a smack. Other times, the glove snaked out, left and right, catching errant throws that missed the strike zone. Every so often, a wild pitch would force him to try and block the ball with his body.

When Bart Steponovich showed up to baseball tryouts at the beginning of the year, he knew the job was open after his brother graduated. After throwing out two runners in the first game, Bart Steponovich has shown that he has the potential to be the next good catcher in the Steponovich family. Playing hours of baseball with his brother has given him plenty of preparation.

“He is, in all aspects of the game, better off than I was, ever, at his age,” Nick Steponovich said. “…I played a couple of games as a sophomore, but I don’t think he was nearly as nervous as I was when I went into it. I think he’s accepted the role pretty well.”

Nick Steponovich, who is in his first season playing at Ohio State,Celtic shirt, committed a single error his junior season at Hickman. Then, his senior season, he didn’t commit any. He has tried to teach his younger brother about the importance of being good with a glove. Their father,Valencia shirt, Tony Steponovich, taught them the importance of good defense. Nick Steponovich said his father’s motto was “Nothing gets by.”

“Something he always taught me was in baseball,” Bart Steponovich said,Lazio shirt, “you can always control your defense,”

Hickman coach Dave Wilson said Bart Steponovich’s defensive skill is important to the team.

“You’ve got to have a really good defensive catcher to win ball games,” Wilson said. “He’s come in and given us a presence back there, thrown people out. He can pick people off because he’s got a really quick release.”

The brothers lifted weights, threw and batted over the summer. They worked on their swings in the batting cages, but they also threw long toss, and Nick Steponovich said his brother’s arm has improved.

Nick Steponovich said the important thing for his brother to focus on is making accurate throws and working on verbal communication during games, but he said he sees some good range in his younger brother’s arm.

“It’s hard for me to compare him to me, but I have to say that his arm strength is at least as good, probably better, than mine was at his age,” Nick Steponovich said.

Hickman pitching coach Bobby Chick said he thinks Bart Steponovich shows a lot of promise, partly because of his arm.

“I think Nick was an outstanding catcher, but I think Bart has a lot more potential,” Chick said. “As a sophomore, he’s already thrown out several kids running. He gives us the opportunity, if someone does get on base,Lyon shirt, to get another out by him throwing down to the base, whether it is second or third. It’s just a relief to know that we have somebody back there, especially as a sophomore, with the arm that he has.”

But defense and throwing are not the only way catchers figure into Hickman’s game.

Chick lets his catcher call the pitches for each game, unless he senses the batters are starting to catch on to the calls. Bart Steponovich has to read the batters the first time through the order. Chick said Bart Steponovich looks for where the hitters set up in relation to the plate and what type of pitches they seem to struggle with.

“You’re going to have to let your catchers become field generals,” Chick said. “He’s done an excellent job of learning the game, calling the game and working well with the pitchers.”

Catchers are the caretakers of the pitching staff, Wilson said, making sure the man on the mound remains calm and collected.

“The more that you catch guys,” Wilson said, “you get to learn their pitches and what works for them and what doesn’t. And (you learn) their moods, when they’re down and when they’re up.”

Hickman’s defense shined during their 8-6 win over Kirksville on Wednesday night.

Sophomore Thomas Brown had a hand in three double plays. Wilson emphasizes the double play as a way to change the momentum of the game.

“Double plays are a pitcher’s best friend,” Wilson said.

Brown said he’s never had a better game on defense. The Kewpies (6-5) emphasise the double play in practice, and the infielders work on it exclusively for about 15 minutes at practice nearly every day. That repetition made it easier for him to turn them.

“Sometimes, you don’t even remember what’s going on,” Brown said. “It just happens.”

Bart Steponovich had a few defensive bright spots of his own, blocking seven pitches in the dirt.

Although the Tigers stole three bases from the Kewpies, Wilson said his catcher played well. Wilson said Hickman’s pitchers didn’t bring the ball to home plate quickly enough to give Bart Steponovich a fair chance.

“He’s done an outstanding job for us,” he said.

Distance swimmers dig deep

二月 24, 2012

Carly Sullivan takes a breath during the women’s 200-yard butterfly finals at the MU Recreation Center on Sunday. Sullivan placed seventh in the butterfly, eight events after placing second in the women’s 1,Peru football shirt,000-yard freestyle. (SARA DEBOLD/Missourian)

Imagine swimming the last part of a 40-lap, 1,000-yard race. Your legs feel like they’re full of cement, and your body feels like it’s on fire. It’s not over yet, though. There’s still another race to swim later.

Such are the lives of Missouri distance swimmers like freshman Colleen Gordon and Dylan Lynn. Gordon won the 200- and 500-yard freestyle races Sunday morning in final day of the Mizzou Duel challenge. Her victories came a day after setting a school record in the grueling 1,650-yard freestyle in 16 minutes, 43 seconds Saturday evening against Iowa and Drury University.

Lynn placed second in the 1,000-yard freestyle Sunday morning, a day after finishing first in the 500-yard freestyle Saturday morning. Not surprisingly,Paris Saint Germain shirt, he was a little sore, but said he feels the worst after a long race.

“The second I hit the wall, it hurts really bad,” Lynn said. “My legs are burning and stiff and sometimes my feet go numb when I swim a lot.”

Distance wasn’t even suppose to be part of the plan for Lynn. He was recruited to Missouri as a short distance sprinter, but he said that all changed over the summer.

“I made the mistake of swimming fast in the 400 freestyle and the coaches moved me up to distance,” Lynn said with a laugh.

Despite the pain, the Missouri men’s and 25th-ranked women’s teams swept their opponents in individual dual meets against Louisville, Iowa, Drury University and Southern Illinois at the Mizzou Aquatic Center.

For Gordon and Lynn,Lyon shirt, the high level of endurance comes from an intense training regiment. During a typical week,Sevilla shirt, Gordon said she swims around 80,000 yards, while Lynn said he typically swims around 8,000 yards a day. Gordon said after frequently swimming long distance events in high school, she is use to the work.

“Distance is very mental,” Gordon said. “You have to hold the same pace. Some days you’ll be totally on it, and some days you won’t be.”

To help keep the right pace, swimmers in longer events look to outside help from coaches. Trying to catch glimpses of hand signals from the coaches serves as a good indication of their place in the race. Although Lynn said he normally uses how he feels as a good pace setter, he sometimes relies on seeing if his coaches have their hands above their head, which signals he is doing well.

Teammates also serve as good source of help. “Counters” at the end of every lane are responsible for dipping a sign underwater that shows what lap the swimmer is on so they don’t forget.

For Missouri coach Brian Hoffer, the weekend offered a good chance for his swimmers to compete in multiple events, and he was pleased the team did well against talented competition. With the various events his swimmers participated in, he said he noticed fatigue was becoming a factor toward the end of the meet. However, he added that his swimmers are extremely fit and will get some rest with a day off Monday.

“They’re very elite athletes, so they’ll recover pretty quick,” Hoffer said.

Missouri womens basketball team determined to improve

二月 22, 2012

COLUMBIA The Missouri womens basketball team isnt taking too kindly to being picked to finish last in the Big 12 Conference for the third consecutive season.

“Its an insult,” Missouri coach Cindy Stein said at the Tigers’ media day Monday at Mizzou Arena. “And were taking it as an insult. I dont know if thats going to put an extra chip,Glasgow Rangers shirt, we already have a chip on our shoulders from last year.”

Last season, the Tigers finished 13-17, winning only four of their 16 conference games. Missouri has other plans for this year.

“I feel great about the team,Valencia shirt,” senior Jessra Johnson said. “I think were going to have a good, exciting season. I cant wait to start it.”

Missouri does have a lot to be excited about. With four starters returning and a roster that includes four seniors, experience is on the Tigers side.

“That helps tremendously because we have a lot of leadership,” junior Shakara Jones said. “Those four starters have played and thats what we have to do. We have to teach these freshman and teach everybody else that we have to play throughout the game in order to get a win.”

This luxury makes Steins job much easier.

“Theyre helping each other out there,” Stein said. Theyre coaching each other a lot. You have coaches on the floor and that helps in every situation.”

But the Tigers lost a lot when Alyssa Hollins graduated. Hollins led Missouri in scoring last season with 13.1 points per game. She also left Missouri as the programs all-time leader in 3-pointers made with 226.

“You cant replace Alyssa Hollins,” Johnson said. “Shes a great player. You just gotta find someone, whoever they may be.”

Stein said she is unsure of who will step up to replace Hollins, but is excited about several players that would be more than capable of excelling in a starting position.

The Tigers will rely heavily on the only two returning double-digit scorers from last season in Johnson (13 points per game) and Jones (10.3). Johnson, a 6-foot-1 forward from Fayette, led the team in double-doubles, rebounds per game, and blocks last season. Jones,Lyon shirt, a forward from St. Charles, led the team in field goal percentage and contributed more than four rebounds a game.

RaeShara Brown, who led the conference in steals and the team in assists last season, and Bekah Mills will also see plenty of court time. The Tigers have a deep bench, returning more than 90 percent of last years squad, Johnson said.

“We gotta lot of returners, so we go through practice a lot easier because were only teaching two people,” Johnson said. “Its a lot of fun whenever youve been playing with each other for so long.”

Incoming freshmen Sydney Crafton of Jefferson City and Trenee Thornton of Kansas City are the Tigers’ only new players.

Stein, Johnson and Jones all agree that this year seems different.

“This years squad has a lot of energy,” Jones said. “Everybodys moving. Were cohesive.”

There seems to be a renewed passion for the team as well.

“I though last years was a really solid work ethic but these guys are putting in even more extra time right now, and thats what you ask for as a coach,” Stein said.

Even with the struggles of the past few seasons, morale and expectations remain high for the Tigers.

“We set the bar where we want to win every game,” Jones said.

Johnson reiterated this lofty goal.

“Come out and win,” Johnson said. “Only thing you can do when youre picked last.”

Stein was even more upbeat.

“We want to finish in the top four (in the Big 12),” Stein said. We want a Big 12 championship.”

Then her message got even more powerful.

“You guys bring your friends because it is going to be an exciting season,AS Roma shirt,” Stein said. “Were going to be the sports story of the year.”

Shealy pleased with opportunity

二月 19, 2012

SURPRISE, Ariz. — Ryan Shealy’s favorite thing about Kansas City is its location — about 500 miles away from Todd Helton.

It’s nothing personal. The All-star first baseman of the Colorado Rockies is a good friend and Shealy’s mentor, as well as a career .333 hitter and the Rockies’ greatest player. Helton even took Shealy out to dinner when the Rockies and Royals played recently.

But as long as Shealy and Helton were in Colorado at the same time, Shealy was never going to play more than a few games.

“Every year I was in Colorado,Celtic shirt, I took something away from playing next to him,” Shealy said. “But at the same time,Sevilla shirt, it was frustrating.”

So Shealy was elated when the Royals and Rockies worked out a four-player trade last summer that sent him to Kansas City, giving him an opportunity.

In response, he hit .280 in 51 games and provided better defense at his position than the Royals have had in more than a decade.

Just 27, he’s been one of the most consistent hitters this spring.

“As a player, all you can ask for is an opportunity,Lyon shirt,” Shealy said. “And the Royals gave me an opportunity last year by trading for me.

“I feel good. My body feels good. I’ve been comfortable here with the guys in this clubhouse. I was real fortunate to come here and play the last two months of last season. The staff and the guys have been great, very welcoming. I’m very excited.”

The Royals are excited to have him. Mike Sweeney, perhaps the best right-handed hitter in Kansas City history, tried his best to play first base but finally proved he’s destined to be a designated hitter. The Royals’ need for a solid defensive first baseman who also supplies some power went unanswered until the deal was worked out with Colorado.

“He showed us a lot last year, that he has a knack for driving in runs. He really understands how to hit, and he plays so very well at first base,” said manager Buddy Bell.

“When people talk about our young team, Shealy’s name doesn’t come up as much as it should. He’s a guy we’re counting on for a long time.”

Shealy had 10 doubles, a triple and seven home runs in his first extended big league action last tear. One of the things the Royals like best is that he does not try to hit a five-run home run every at-bat.

“He just has a knack for understanding the situation and what he needs to do. He doesn’t overswing,” Bell said. “Usually big guys like that have a tendency to overswing.”

It’s not that he can’t hit the long ball. His best power season in four-plus years in the minor leagues was a league-leading 29 home runs for Tulsa in 2004, when he also led the league with 99 RBIs.

But not swinging for the fences every at-bat may be one of his best traits.

“I try to pride myself on being able to do whatever the situation calls for,” Shealy said. “If that means shortening up and just a getting a single to drive in a run, so be it. If it means hitting the ball out of the park, so be it. Whatever the situation calls for,Inter Milan shirt, I want to be able to do it.”

In the meantime, the Royals got good news Sunday on the injury front. Third baseman Alex Gordon’s sore shoulder was much improved and he told Bell he was ready to go after sitting out a few games. And right-hander Brian Bannister seemed to have no ill-effects after taking a shot to the back of his left knee during a “B” game against the Texas Rangers.

Mavs’ Bill Clark resigns; cites his lack of contributions

二月 18, 2012

Bill Clark resigned as the director of player procurement for the Mid-Missouri Mavericks on Thursday.

Clark, who joined the Mavericks in December, said he felt like he did not help the Mavericks as much as he would have liked.

“I felt like I had contributed very little to the organization because the kids I brought in (were released) immediately,Celtic shirt,” Clark said.

“I made some contributions,Lyon shirt, but not enough to make any difference. I didn’t get the players here that I felt would’ve turned the franchise around.

“I hope the paying public will accept the fact that (the Mavericks) are (4-25) right now and support them because I’d like to see pro baseball succeed around here.”

He said he lost “about 50 players” he had contacted to other independent leagues that paid better and covered more player expenses.

“It’s tougher to bring guys in here,” Clark said. “That’s a problem with the Frontier League, not just with the Mavs.

“I guess I’m not accustomed to this level of baseball,Napoli shirt, and it’s best I move on.”

Clark had been a scout since 1968. He tracked players for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Seattle Pilots,Wales football shirt, Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds before taking international scouting director positions for the Atlanta Braves and the San Diego Padres.
