Competition fuels defense in Tigers’ first scrimmage

三月 7, 2012

Columbia- All it took was a lightning strike to charge up the defense.

For the first hour of Monday’s scrimmage,Manchester City shirt, the Missouri football team’s defense struggled to stop the offense. Chase Daniel and Chase Patton consistently marched their respective units up the field, and the defense made mistakes that resulted in big gains. In the first half-hour alone, wide receiver Danario Alexander had two catches that totaled 73 yards after poor coverage and missed tackles by the defense.

When lightning was spotted north of the practice fields, however, the team moved inside Devine Pavilion. At that point, the offense was beating the defense 27-8. After the move, the intensity of the practice increased, and the defense forced the offense into mistakes. Only time restraints stopped the defense’s furious comeback, and practice ended around 10:30 with a 49-43 victory for the offense. The team used the same scoring system it has in previous scrimmages, where the defense earns points for stops, turnovers, blocks and the like.

While defensive players admitted that the move inside Devine Pavilion helped them regroup, it was the offense that helped them turn up the intensity.

“They fuel us,” defensive tackle Ziggy Hood said of the offense. “We know we have a high-powered offense, and we just try to compete against them.”

Hood said there is a certain clout that follows the offense wherever the team goes. With returning starters such as Daniel,Atletico Madrid shirt, Tony Temple, Will Franklin, Martin Rucker and Chase Coffman, Hood expects records to fall this year.

“We should have the best offense in the Big 12,” Hood said. “It’s hard to go against them every day, but it’s good for us. We won’t face an offense like them in the season, and when we do go against a high scoring team, we’ll be ready. It’ll be a better game, you know?”

Junior Brock Christopher, the middle linebacker and one of the unquestioned leaders of the defense, said the offense casts a shadow over the defense at times.

“We try to not pay attention to what people say about the offense, though,” Christopher said after the scrimmage. “We’re fortunate to be able to compete against them in practice. They’ve got a lot of great athletes,South Africa football shirt, but we’ve got great athletes on our side of the ball, too.”

Christopher said that even though the defense made mistakes that ended in big gains for the offense, he was happy with the level of competition.

“It gets pretty heated out there,” Christopher said, sweat still pouring down his face even though practice had been over for nearly half an hour.

“The offense has got a lot of swagger, confidence, and we try to stop that.”

That swagger is evident at any practice. From Daniel’s familiar strut on the sideline,Birmingham shirt, to Greg Bracey’s constant talking, the offensive unit clearly knows the talent it possesses.

“It gets intense, but it’s lots of fun,” Christopher added.

Coach Gary Pinkel said he was pleased with the defense’s showing in Monday’s scrimmage.

“They gave up some big plays early, but they responded to adversity well,” Pinkel said. “The defense has a lot of depth. We’ve got some real good athletes there.”

Patton lead the offense in passing, with 216 yards and two touchdowns while completing 12 of 21 attempts. Daniel went for 182 yards on 9 of 12 passing. Jimmy Jackson gained 30 yards and one touchdown on the ground on 12 carries, and Marcus Woods finished with 41 yards on four carries. Cornerback Paul Simpson had an interception for the defense.’

? Woods was carted off the field in the first hour of practice after being tackled awkwardly. Pinkel said the injury appears to be a high-ankle sprain. “If it is that, we’ll put a cast or a boot on his ankle,” Pinkel said. Pinkel also said that Temple, who has been out with a bruised knee, may return next week.

? Kicker Jeff Wolfert appears to be in the running for the kickoff job, as well as placekicking duties. Wolfert, a 2006 Lou Groza Award semifinalist, has been adding leg strength in the past months, Pinkel said. Last year, Adam Crossett handled kickoff duties.

? MU coaches had tentatively planned to release a spring depth chart Monday, but decided to spend the evening looking at film before finalizing it. Check ColumbiaMissourian.com for a depth chart later today.

? The Tigers will practice at 8:15 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. today.

Kansas State defying expectations

三月 1, 2012

COLUMBIA — The Kansas State women’s basketball team began the season with relatively modest expectations.

They were coming off an 11th place conference finish and 4-12 Big 12 record and predicted to finish eighth in the conference in the Big 12 coaches preseason poll.

And after an 8-5 run through a tough non-conference schedule those predictions and expectations looked to be right on target.

Instead the No. 17 Wildcats have rolled through Big 12 play and are in the driver’s seat for a conference title with a 9-1 record and sole possession of first place. The Wildcats’ success has surprised the coaches that picked them to finish in the bottom half of the conference,Manchester City shirt, and even their own head coach.

“I could never have imagined that at this stage in Big 12 play we would be 9-1,” Wildcats coach Deb Patterson said. “I think it’s been a wonderful ride for us, and at the same time there’s no way I could have expected it.”

The Wildcats have become the top team in the conference without the overwhelming individual performances players like Oklahoma center Courtney Paris or Oklahoma State point guard Andrea Riley bring. The Wildcats not only lead the Big 12 in assists and assist to turnover ratio,Sevilla shirt, but they’ve been solid everywhere else.

“We’re not that dominant roster that Oklahoma brings to the floor,” Patterson said. “We’re just going to have to work and play well to win a basketball game. It doesn’t matter who we’re lined up against, we’re going to be challenged.”

While the Wildcats don’t have anyone in the race for Big 12 Player of the Year, they have gotten strong performances from Kimberly Dietz, junior forward Marlies Gipson and junior point guard Shalee Lehning. Dietz is the Wildcats’ leading scorer (15.4 ppg) and has emerged as a strong leader for KSU. Patterson has been especially pleased with Dietz’s eagerness to step forward and score when the Wildcats need a basket.

“She’s wanted the responsibility when times are tough to make the play,” Patterson said. “Coaches can call your number and ask you to try to make a play, but when you’re on the floor and you want to make the play it changes everything. That’s really what Kimberly’s brought this year. She wants to make the play, she wants the responsibility, when her team is in need, to be a factor.”

That mentality hasn’t always been there for Dietz. It has come as she matured from a freshman who was trying to figure out her role to one of three seniors on a team competing for a conference championship.

“It’s probably just my experience,” Dietz said. “I kind of know the ins and outs of Big 12 basketball.”

Lehning is the player who is mainly responsible for the Wildcats having the most assists and best assist to turnover ratio in the conference. She easily leads the Big 12 in assists with 6.3 per game — all others average less than five — and she also scores just over 10 points and grabs seven rebounds per game. It’s that well-rounded stat line that makes Patterson consider her to be one of the best guards in the country.

“She’s a throwback,” Patterson said. “Lehning I think just gives us a chance to be good.”

On the frontline, Gipson recovered from a knee injury that ended her 2006-2007 season after 16 games and is fourth in the conference in field goal percentage (54.5 %) and leads the Wildcats with 8.3 rebounds per game. While her statistics show her impact,Santos shirt, Patterson is especially impressed with her intelligence on the court and her ability to run the defense on the floor.

“She’s kind of like Mike Singletary or a great middle linebacker, somebody that just sees things, communicates it and keeps you really solid in your defense,” Patterson said.

The Tigers have reason to be encouraged that they’ll be able to play with the conference leaders. The Tigers played well in their last two games at Mizzou Arena and almost came up with wins against Nebraska and No. 10 Oklahoma. MU let a 10-point lead with five and a half minutes to play slip away against the Huskers and was tied late with the high-powered Sooners.

“It made us realize that we can play to that level and we can play to that level all the time, not just with spurts all the time,Atletico Madrid shirt,” freshman forward Shakara Jones said.

While MU’s last two home performances serve as warnings to the Wildcats, they aren’t necessary because KSU can’t afford to overlook any team.

“It’s not hard at all for us, it’s not our nature to think anyone we’re going to play is an easy game,” Patterson said. “There’s no such thing for us.”

Missouri mens basketball defeats Texas Tech in Big 12 Tournament opener

二月 28, 2012

KANSAS CITY The scene Wednesday featuring guard Michael Dixon Jr. was all too familiar.

With 18.1 seconds remaining and the Missouri men’s basketball team holding an 86-84 lead over Texas Tech in its first game of the Big 12 Tournament at the Sprint Center,Inter Milan shirt, Dixon was fouled and sent to the free-throw line.

Dixon looked up at the basket. It was before this same basket, in this same building, at the same end of the court, that Dixon had a chance to secure a victory over Georgetown three months ago. In that game, he failed.

But standing at the free-throw line in Wednesday nights game,Manchester City shirt, he made the first free throw to give Missouri a 3-point cushion.

Then, after Texas Tech guard John Roberson missed a hurried layup, the ball bounced around between players. Missouris Marcus Denmon came up with it. He ran in circles, and for nearly 10 seconds, no Texas Tech player could catch him.

Finally,South Africa football shirt, Texas Tech forward Mike Singletary fouled Denmon and sent him to the line, where Denmon made one more free throw to seal Missouris 88-84 victory.

The sixth-seeded Tigers advance to play third-seeded Texas A&M in Thursday’s second round.

Denmon led the Tigers with 20 points, five assists and five steals. Dixon had 17 points; guard Kim English scored 15.

Missouri players said before the game that they were worried the Texas Tech players would come out with extra motivation because their coach, Pat Knight, was fired on Monday after three unsuccessful seasons with the Red Raiders.

Within the game’s first 10 minutes,Lazio shirt, Texas Tech gained a seven-point lead and began making highlight reel-worthy plays including alley-oop dunks.

After Texas Techs fast start, Missouri came back, and it appeared the Tigers would take over when they began the second half with an 8-0 run. However, Texas Tech never went away and was able to keep the game close until the final moments.

Scherzer waiting to finalize pro deal

二月 24, 2012

Seven months after being selected 11th overall by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2006 Major League Baseball draft, former Missouri pitcher Max Scherzer has yet to finalize a contract with the team. All but a handful of the players selected in the first round signed with their respective teams by August,Bayern Munich shirt, but Scherzer said he remains on good terms with the Diamondbacks organization and is hopeful a deal can be made before the start of spring training on March 1.

Scherzer attributed the delay to an injury he suffered during the 2006 season with Missouri, which raised some questions within the Diamondbacks organization. Scherzer developed biceps tendonitis early in the season, and twice took around two weeks off from pitching to address the problem.

He said he agreed with Arizonas request to be examined by an independent doctor this fall,Manchester City shirt, and was given a full medical clearance. At one point,Santos shirt, it was unclear whether Scherzer would need surgery to repair his arm and shoulder, but he said that his doctors now believe no surgery is needed.

Im ready to play ball whenever, and if they want me out there by spring training, then Ill be out by spring training, Scherzer said. Its kind of on them to see where this goes from here.

The delay of Scherzers contract may also relate to changes within the Diamondbacks organization. Former Director of Scouting Mike Rizzo had been with the organization for seven years before agreeing to become an assistant general manager with the Washington Nationals following the draft this summer. According to www.scout.com, Rizzo acted as the primary negotiator in drafting Scherzer, and his departure may have added to the complications.

Scherzer said that he has not talked directly to Arizona officials since being drafted,Ajax shirt, and instead has left all negotiations to his agent, Scott Boras. He said he has been given updates on the contracts progress by Boras on a weekly to monthly basis.

New Missouri swim coach looking to build something

COLUMBIA The Show-Me Showdown on Saturday at the Mizzou Aquatic Center was not only the premiere of the 2010 Missouri swimming and diving team but also the debut for its new head coach Greg Rhodenbaugh.

“I was excited to see the team swim against others, not just other members on the team,” Rhodenbaugh said. “I am already pleased with the way the swimmers are thinking.”

What caught Rhodenbaugh’s attention was that the team was ready to compete and to do well. Both the Missouri men’s and women’s teams won the Show-Me Showdown.

Rhodenbaugh was an assistant coach for the Arizona Wildcats for 11 years before moving to Missouri.

“When I moved from Arizona, I knew it was time. I grew up in the Midwest and was looking for a reason to come back,” Rhodenbaugh said. “Once I was here, I knew I was supposed to be here.”

Not only was Rhodenbaugh excited to see his teams performance, but he also was excited to be reunited with SLU coach Jim Halliburton.

Rhodenbaugh and Halliburton competed and won the U.S. National Championship Relay together in 1983 for the Cincinnati Marlins Club Team.

“It was great to see him again. I’m glad that he got the job, and I think he will do a wonderful job with the Missouri team,” said Halliburton.

Arizona had a championship culture unlike the Missouri swimming and diving team. In 2008 he helped coach the mens and womens national championship teams.

“Over time we had built a championship mentality where everyone expected a lot going into the program … We always had a shot to win and they trained and raced like that,” said Rhodenbaugh. “We had a lot of equipment that was vital to our success. It will take time to get that here. Maybe three to four years to develop a system. But we are figuring it out. It is challenging, but rewarding.”

Arizona has 24 power towers which help condition swimmers, while Mizzou only has three, said Rhodenbaugh.

“It’s hard because only six of our swimmers can use it at once,Glasgow Rangers shirt, where as Arizona’s whole team could use them at the same time,” said Rhodenbaugh, “We are just trying to figure out what other equipment to use to substitute and be able to use in this setting.”

Rhodenbaugh left Arizona for many reasons,Lazio shirt, including that he wanted to “build something.”

“Im looking forward to building up this team. It has a good foundation, but I want to get it to a level that it hasnt been at, which is exciting,” Rhodenbaugh said, “They just dont know what they can be, so we are trying to show them.”

Senior Melissa Jamerson appreciates Rhodenbaugh’s mentality.

“He has a lot of philosophies on how to train,Dortmund shirt,” she said. “Mainly he wants to make us better people, not just swimmers. Everything we do has a purpose; he doesn’t just make us swim back and forth. He pushes us and tells us we can be great and have potential, which makes us push past our boundaries.”

Hickman wins softball sectional

二月 19, 2012

COLUMBIA The Hickman softball team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Class 4 state softball tournament Wednesday in chilly 50-degree temperatures with a 7-1 victory over Wentzville-Holt at Rock Bridge High School.

Despite the weather, the Kewpies (25-2) had hot bats in the second inning and handful of stolen bases throughout the seven innings.
Although they said they would have liked to play in warmer weather,Wales football shirt, Kewpies coach Courtney Haskell and pitcher Taylor Cowan agreed that it did not hinder the team’s performance.

“The kids were prepared,” Haskell said. “We haven’t practiced in that, but there’s not a whole lot you can do about it.”

The Kewpies opened up the game with two runs in the first inning and scored five in the second. The Indians only run came in the bottom of the second inning.

“We came out and hit the ball well, we were hitting it hard,” Cowan said.

Although the scoring ended early, Hickman’s numerous stolen bases kept the audience engaged. Kewpies runners stole bases in six innings.

“When you see girls throwing a a lot of change-ups that gives you a little more time to get through on the bases, especially when your kids can pick that up, it helps a lot,” Haskell said.

Wentzville (16-8) relied on a trick play at the top of the fifth to get its first out of the inning. Catcher Aubri Perez threw the ball high into the air towards first base, successfully tricking base runner Whitney Grathwohl,Celtic shirt, into believing hitter Kaylin Britt had hit a pop up. Grathwohl, who was on her way to second, returned to first, but was tagged before she reached the plate.

“They got an out out of it,Manchester City shirt, which I’m sure was their goal,” Haskell said.

Haskell said that she was proud of her team’s victory, calling it a team effort.

“Honestly up and down the lineup they put the ball in play,” she said, “and defensively they took care of business.”

Hickman moves on to face the winner of Thursday’s sectional game between Ozark (23-5) and Webb City (26-3). the game was postponed Wednesday because of wet weather. The Kewpies are set to play the winners on Saturday in Jefferson City.

“For Saturday, we need to come out, hit like we’ve been hitting and work on our defense and we’ll be good,Santos shirt,” Cowan said.

Haskell echoed the sentiments saying the team would prepare the same way they had all season.

Fans of all ages brave heat at MU football fan day

二月 15, 2012

COLUMBIA The Golden Girls and cheerleaders werent the only people wearing sparkling costumes at the Missouri football teams fan day on Sunday at Memorial Stadium.

In the middle of the winding lines leading to the white tents that housed the Tigers’ seniors and starters Genia Vincent and her daughter Lauren Vincent stood out in the late afternoon sunshine. The women wore black Missouri football T-shirts that they had emblazoned with sparkling gold and silver sequins. Shimmering letters covered their backs, prominently displaying the name Vincent.

The two women made the shirts to support freshman defensive lineman Lucas Vincent, who is Genia Vincents son and Lauren Vincents brother.

“We just ordered jerseys,” Genia Vincent said. “We dont have them yet, so instead of spending another $30 or $40 on shirts for everyone, we made these.”

The Vincents brought a group of friends with them from Olathe, Kan., to support Lucas Vincent in his first fan day as a Tiger. They planned to get as many autographs as possible, and Genia Vincent hastily snapped pictures of as many players as she could.

The autographed posters and pictures were more than just sentimental memorabilia for the Vincents to take back to Kansas, however. Genia Vincent admitted to having an ulterior motive. She said she plans to take a signed poster back to her sons former high school, Olathe North, to compete with all of the Kansas Jayhawks memorabilia that dominates the town.

“Im going to put it there next to all those KU posters,” she said with a smile.

Unlike the Vincents, brothers Nicholas, age 15, and Michael Godas,Manchester City shirt, 17, live in the heart of Missouri football country. Wearing black and gold Tigers football T-shirts, the two Rock Bridge High School students waited in line to see some of their favorite players, including Blaine Gabbert and Rolandis Woodland.

Nicholas, who plays football for Rock Bridge, hopes that the time he spent on the field Sunday will not be his last.

“Yeah, I want to go here,” he said. “I want to play football for Mizzou.”

Along with aspiring MU students, much of the crowd was proud MU graduates, including David McAllister. After descending the steep steps of Memorial Stadium, McAllister headed straight for the Golden Girls, in order to get what his wife called the “annual picture.”

“Hes only missed one of these fan days, just one,” his wife, Lura McAllister, said.

A Missouri native who now lives in Jefferson City, David McAllister is a lifelong fan.

“Ive been a fan since I went to my first game when I was 10,Glasgow Rangers shirt,” he said. “I especially like watching the defense.”

Between the winding lines, most of the non-starters and younger players mingled, guzzling water and talking. One of the players, junior wide receiver Terry Dennis, stood out as a crowd favorite.

“Id hate to be sitting,” Dennis said. “Im such a people person.”

Standing at midfield,Italy football shirt, Dennis grinned for photo after photo with boys who, standing on tip-toe, were barely taller than his knees. Running back and forth, the boys greeted Dennis with enthusiasm and didnt seem the least bit intimidated by his 6-foot-3, 205-pound frame.

“Theyre my buddies,” he said. “I know them from all the stuff I do around town.”

This “stuff” includes volunteer work at football camps, Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Boys and Girls Clubs.

“Theyll run up to me and say, Hey, I know you from camp,” Dennis said.

One boy, out of breath with flushed cheeks, ran up to Dennis and tossed him a bottle of cool water. With a smile and a pat on the back, Dennis bent down, his bare knee resting on the scorching hot Astroturf,Bayern Munich shirt, for yet another picture. Despite the heat, the fans kept coming and the players kept smiling.

“Its like a second wind,” Dennis said. “Youre tired .. but you get here and see the fans and youre ready to go.”

Veteran continues strong run at Grand Prix

二月 15, 2012

COLUMBIA — Mary Descenza is, in her words, “weird.” In and out of the water, the U.S. National Team swimmer is a bundle of energy, arms and flailing legs.

“As my coach said, I have a lot of moving parts,” Descenza said. “I’m kind of all over the place.”

The exuberant butterflyer, though, has a focus befitting a swimmer in her seventh year on the National Team.

“You usually see me around the pool deck laughing and kind of just farting around, doing my thing,” said Descenza, a member of the Athens Bulldog Swim Club in Georgia. “But I always go in kind of serious, have some goals in mind. Just kind of want to go around the best times.”

Descenza arrived in Columbia for the Missouri Grand Prix this weekend leading the Toyota Grand Prix series in points. The Missouri Grand Prix marks the third of eight meets in the Grand Prix series, and the winner receives a $20,000 prize.

“I don’t keep track of that stuff,” Descenza said. “I do it because I love it, not to look at points and scoreboards. I mean,Newcastle United shirt, yeah,Werder Bremen shirt, $20,000 is nice, but I just enjoy the racing and seeing my friends at all these meets.”

Descenza was at her best Saturday, winning the 200-meter butterfly and placing third in the 200-meter backstroke. She was the only swimmer of either gender to compete in the top heat of both events, which occur back-to-back in the meet’s schedule.

Descenza had a tougher time at the Missouri Grand Prix in 2007. Though she won the 200-back,Benfica shirt, Descenza placed third in the 100-meter backstroke, the 50-meter butterfly and the 200-fly, and did not medal in four other events.

“It was a little bit more difficult,Manchester City shirt,” Descenza said. “I just didn’t swim as fast, I don’t know why. Everyone has up and down years. I’m really pleased with how I’m doing this year, so I hope I keep on staying up and swimming fast.”

Descenza is spending her time now training for the Olympics, doing butterfly sets and “getting my (butt) kicked in the weight room and the pool as always.” She said this weekend, with a fast group of swimmers and a morning finals setup she’s not used to, would be good training.

“For meets like this, I get to swim two events per day, so it really tests your endurance and strength,” Descenza said. “It’s just good training for me and prepares me for when I get to swim just one event a day, so it’ll be that much easier.”

Royals can’t manage road sweep in Boston

BOSTON — In a season that has turned sour for Boston, David Ortiz is giving Red Sox fans something to cheer for.

Ortiz hit his career-high 48th home run and Wily Mo Pena drove in two runs to help the Boston Red Sox snap a three-game losing streak with a 9-3 win over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday.

Big Papi now stands two home runs shy of tying the single-season franchise record for home runs. Jimmie Foxx set the record with 50 in 1938.

“It seems like it’s a big deal here, so let’s see if we can get it done,” said Ortiz,l.a.galaxy shirt, who went 2-for-3 and scored three runs. “You’ve just got to take a couple of good swings, right? I’ve got plenty of time.”

The Royals missed out on the chance to sweep their first road series since July 11-13,Santos shirt, 2003, when they won three straight against the Texas Rangers. Kansas City has gone 86 consecutive road series without a sweep,Manchester City shirt, the longest stretch in franchise history and the third-longest in the majors since 1923.

“Sweeping these guys at home would have been nice,” Kansas City catcher John Buck said. “But the next step in the learning process is not to be satisfied with two wins and obviously go after that third one.”

Mark Redman (9-9) allowed five runs and nine hits in 4 2/3 innings, snapping his two-game winning streak. Redman had allowed one run in 16 innings in his two previous starts, a 2-0 win over Minnesota on Aug. 29 and a 7-3 win over the Chicago White Sox on Sept. 3, but was touched early by Boston.
