ESPNU’s Mike Hall drops anchor at MU

三月 9, 2012

Mike Hall is performing tonight in a show of Comedy Wars alumni.

Standing near the MU Columns, Mike Hall still looks like a typical college student. His dirty blond hair is styled to make it look messy. His long-sleeved, purple shirt adorned with white vertical stripes was left unbuttoned at the chest. His sunglasses were pinned to the inside of his collar, despite the bright sun shining over the MU campus.

“Hey Mike, how’s it going? Great to see you!” shouted a female student walking across Francis Quadrangle.

“It’s going great! Nice to see you too,” Hall responded.

The student kept walking, smiling as she walked away. Hall and the woman reacted to each other like they knew each other — like old friends who hadn’t seen each other in years.

“I’ve never met her,” Hall said. “It would have been better if I knew her name.”

That charm and ease in front of strangers is partly what turned Hall from a broadcast journalism major at MU into the winner of ESPN’s first Dream Job competition in the spring of 2004. He is the lead anchor of ESPNU,Napoli shirt, a network that focuses on college sporting events. With football and basketball in their respective offseasons, the network is experiencing a seasonal lull in programming.

“I guess it just goes with the territory,” Hall said.

Because of the relative lack of programming, Hall was able to leave Charlotte, N.C.,Italy football shirt, the heaquarters of ESPNU, to speak this morning with a group of Missouri student athletes who have grade point averages above 3.0. Tonight at 9:30, Hall will be performing in a show of Comedy Wars alumni.

“I think that of all the the things that I’ve done, Comedy Wars is what I’m the most proud of,” Hall said. “It’s something that we had to rebuild when I was a junior.”

After arriving Tuesday afternoon and before his engagements today,Porto shirt, Hall had time to walk around Columbia, reliving his time as a student.

One of his first stops in Columbia was the Columns. There,Sevilla shirt, by chance, he met KOMU anchor Jim Riek, who was shooting a remote in front of the Columns. The two chatted for at least 10 minutes, before Riek’s cameraman whisked him away from his former student.

“There’s nothing like being in Columbia,” Hall said.

The current look of Francis Quadrangle is still disjointing to a student who passes it everyday. For Hall, who hasn’t visited Columbia since November of 2004, the view was jarring.

“At first I thought the new building was going to be there,” Hall said, pointing at the construction. “But if a school is building a lot of things it’s a good sign.”

Hall walked east to Ninth Street to continue his self-guided tour.

“I doubt that anybody will recognize me,” Hall said. “I don’t think that too many people know who I am.”

One woman, driving in a white, four-door car stopped at the corner of Ninth and University and appeared to recognize Hall. Although she didn’t prolong her stop, she looked at Hall and put her hands on her face, appearing starstruck.

Just seconds later, Hall saw that a binder full of papers had blown onto the street in front of Lion’s Choice. With traffic stopped, Hall assisted the male student with his binder, picking up as many stray papers as he could.

“I’ve been in situations like that before,” Hall said.

The student didn’t recognize him. He thanked Hall for his help and went on his way.

Tigers coming together on, off court

COLUMBIA The Missouri men’s basketball team is a happy bunch.

After the Tigers’ 70-47 win Saturday against Nebraska, players stuck around afterward to sign autographs, give hugs and take photos with fans.

Players took pictures with members of Zou Crew, the student cheering group,AS Roma shirt, who had made Valentine’s Day posters. The signs read, “Kiss Me Kimmie,” “Love Me Lyons” and “DeMarry Me Carroll.”

Coach Mike Anderson and forward Leo Lyons, who was suspended earlier in the season, shared a laugh and a smile outside the locker room after the game.

Lyons had nagged Anderson earlier in the season about letting the senior shoot a pair of technical free throws. Anderson gave in Saturday, and Lyons made both shots.

“I thought Leo played well,” Anderson said. “You notice he had a little smirk when he looked at me when he made those free throws.”

After off-court incidents and egos defined last season, the current Tigers have developed a strong unity. Anderson has called his squad “the ultimate team.”

“I think they like one another,” Anderson said. “They want to represent Missouri in a first-class way on and off the floor.”

On the court, the No. 17 Tigers share the ball unselfishly, ranking second in the country in assists per game. Saturday, Missouri had 18 assists on its 25 baskets.

The Tigers used a team effort on defense to hold Nebraska to 29 percent shooting. Nine different Tigers had at least one steal.

For the second time this season, Nebraska crammed its defense into the paint to take away Lyons’ scoring. In the first meeting, the Tigers tried for force the ball into the post anyway. They were too reliant on Lyons and forward DeMarre Carroll.

Saturday was different. Nearly every player on the Tigers roster made a positive contribution. Rather than try to force the action, Lyons focused on other aspects of the game. He finished with his third double-digit rebounding game of the season.

Freshman guard Kim English said the Tigers’ team play on the floor is a result of their close bond away from basketball.

“Our friendships off the court, I always say, translates to unselfish play on the court because we always want to see our guy, our friend, get a block or a dunk or a steal,Napoli shirt,” English said. “It’s just fun to play with your friends. We’re just a bunch of college friends playing basketball.”

Lawrence says this is the closest he has been with a group of teammates during his four years on campus.

“We’re buddy-buddy in the locker room, outside of the court, but in practice we get after it every day,” Lawrence said.

Good chemistry on this year’s team was far from a guarantee when the Tigers entered the season with seven new players.

Early season trips to Canada and Puerto Rico helped the team bond. Spending eight weeks together before school started brought players together as well.

“We just kind of jelled automatically,” English said.

According to Lawrence, the winning attitude of the young players immediately earned the older players’ respect.

“I think these guys are just great guys. They’re great character guys. We knew we didn’t have to worry about them getting in trouble outside of basketball,” Lawrence said. “They want to be here. They want to be Missouri Tigers.”

The team’s shared goal,Juventus shirt, of winning a national championship, also brings players together.

“It would be stupid to want to have 20 wins,Bayern Munich shirt,” English said, “We want to win the national championship. That’s why we lace them up every day.”

Royals hitting produces few runs

三月 3, 2012

KANSAS CITY — So many hits. So few runs.

In their most inefficient effort of what’s shaping up to be a third straight 100-loss season, the Kansas City Royals collected 15 hits Sunday, including two home runs. But out of all that they managed to score only four runs.

The surging Oakland Athletics were grateful to escape with a 6-4 victory and get out of town with a split of their four-game series.

“How many double plays did they turn?” Royals manager Buddy Bell asked with a shake of his head.

Three, he was told.

“It seemed like we hit into one every inning.”

Nick Swisher had a two-run home run and Jay Payton a two-run double for the A’s, who have won eight of their past 10 games to stay atop the AL West. Their August record of 14-4 is second-best in the majors behind only the Los Angeles Dodgers.

But it was a bad day for the A’s in one important sense. Earlier Sunday, they put closer Huston Street on the 15-day disabled list with a strained groin muscle he suffered while pitching on Friday night. Huston, whose 29 saves were sixth in the AL, was scheduled for an MRI on today.

“He’s a big part of our team,” said Justin Duchscherer,Inter Milan shirt, who pitched the ninth and gave up Mark Grudzielanek’s inside-the-park home run. “We’re going to miss him. But we can’t do anything about it but go out there and do the best we can when we have to pitch.”

It’s the 14th time the A’s have used the disabled list this year, their most since they also used it 14 times in 1998.

“It’s nice to go out there with all our weapons. We haven’t had that all season,” manager Ken Macha said.

Kirk Saarloos (6-6) survived six shaky innings for his third straight victory. He gave up nine singles, a double and Reggie Sanders’ solo home run. He also had 12 groundball outs.

“When that ball’s down and sinking good, they hit it into the ground,” Macha said.

In a day of frustration for the Royals, Saarloos’ last inning was easily the most exasperating of all.

After Mark Teahen led off with a single and Emil Brown grounded into a double play,Paris Saint Germain shirt, Sanders, Ryan Shealy,Napoli shirt, Paul Bako and Joey Gathright all had solid singles. Sanders scored on Bako’s hit, but then Bako was caught between second and third following Gathright’s single and became an easy putout.

“Five hits in one inning and they only get one run,” Macha said. “A little bit of a baserunning mistake wound up being key there.”

Andres Blanco and David DeJesus then singled leading off the seventh against reliever Joe Kennedy. But Grudzielanek grounded into the Royals’ third double play in three innings and Teahen hit a weak grounder to second,Real Madrid shirt, leaving the Royals with only one run despite getting six straight singles.

“We had them against the ropes a few times but the double plays killed us. Absolutely killed us,” said Grudzielanek, whose inside-the-parker was his first and No. 90 in the Royals 37-year history.

“We had a ground ball pitcher. We were probably a little overly aggressive with him. We should have been a little more selective.”

Runelvys Hernandez (3-8) went 42/3 innings and was charged with four runs and four hits. He walked four and struck out two.

The A’s loaded the bases in the first and got a sacrifice fly from Eric Chavez before Payton’s two-run double. Mark Kotsay’s sacrifice fly made it 4-0 in the third.

Grudzielanek’s ball sliced away from Bradley and then kept rolling along the wall away from him.

Was Grudzielanek thinking home run?

“With my wheels right now, the way I feel? No,” he said.

Sehwag in focus as India pick squad for England

三月 1, 2012

. Virender Sehwag’s fitness, though, remains uncertain after he?underwent surgery?on his shoulder. There have been conflicting reports on how long his recovery will take, but the selectors might risk picking him even if he is a doubt for the first Test, which begins on July 21.

?

Sreesanth, Gambhir,Bordeaux shirt, Sehwag and Zaheer have all spent time rehabilitating at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore, and Gambhir and Sreesanth have publicly declared their fitness. Zaheer, too, is expected back. Tendulkar had asked to be rested for the the West Indies tour and should be charged up for England.

?

M Vijay is likely to retain his place at the top if Sehwag doesn’t make the cut but if Sehwag is fit India are unlikely to take an extra opener along – unless they pick a 17-man touring party as they did to South Africa. That squad included two extra quicks, one extra spinner, one extra middle-order batsman, one reserve wicketkeeper and an extra opener.

?

When everybody is fit, the XI selects itself, with Sreesanth edging out Praveen Kumar as the third pace bowler. Praveen will be one of those extra quicks for sure after his impressive showing in the West Indies, and Munaf Patel and Abhimanyu Mithun will jostle for the final pace place. Munaf, though,South Africa football shirt,?wasn’t fit?for the West Indies Tests, and that could play some role in his selection for England. Amit Mishra will be the extra spinner, Parthiv Patel the reserve keeper, and Vijay the extra opening batsman should India need one.

?

The final spot remains the one in the middle order. Suresh Raina has all but earned himself the No. 6 slot for the Lord’s Test, but the extra middle-order batsman makes for an interesting debate. Cheteshwar Pujara is yet to recover from his injury – he picked up a?knee injury?during the IPL, when his foot got stuck in the turf as he attempted a sliding save – and is ruled out. Virat Kohli hasn’t had a great debut series in the West Indies,Napoli shirt, and will be challenged by the Man of the Series in the World Cup, Yuvraj Singh. Yuvraj was expected to make his Test comeback in the West Indies, but a chest infection kept him away. Now that he is fit, Yuvraj v Kohli, mentor and protg of sorts,Benfica shirt, will make for some debate

Neinas says Big 12 has no immediate plans to expand

二月 25, 2012

,Retro Football Shirts

NORMAN, Okla. Interim Big 12 Commissioner Chuck Neinas said Saturday the conference has no plans to expand further before next season, though that doesn’t mean a move back to 12 teams couldn’t happen eventually.

Leaders of the conference’s schools have been divided over whether the league is best with 10 schools, where it settled after losing Nebraska and Colorado before this season, or finding a way to expand back to 12.

With Texas A&M and possibly Missouri headed to the Southeastern Conference, the Big 12 has added West Virginia and Texas Christian University this year in an attempt to stabilize.

“We’ve got to get our house in order. We’re pretty good with 10 or, if Missouri stays, 11,” Neinas said Saturday after helping with the unveiling of a statue of former Sooners coach Barry Switzer across the street from Oklahoma’s Owen Field.

“We’ll be very strong and solidified, and then once you get that,Napoli shirt, you do your homework first and everything else takes care of itself.”

Neinas said the Big 12 expansion committee hasn’t met since deciding last week to add West Virginia instead of Big East rival Louisville.

“The expansion committee will continue to look at the landscape of college athletics and at some point will make a determination what they feel is the best size for the conference,” Neinas said.

Neinas refused to comment extensively on the status of Missouri, which the Big 12 left off its list of 10 teams expected to compete in the conference next season when it added West Virginia. The SEC also inadvertently posted on its website last week that Missouri had been admitted to the league, then had to step back from that premature announcement.

“We would anticipate that might happen, but … it’s a work in progress,” Neinas said when asked about the Tigers being left off the list of Big 12 teams for next season.

When asked about a time frame for Missouri’s decision to stay or go, Neinas said: “Selfishly, I hope sooner rather than later.”

SEC Commissioner Mike Slive in Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the game between No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Alabama, declined comment on Missouri.

“That’s for another day,Juventus shirt,” he said.

Neinas also said the Big 12 is considering whether it could create a network in collaboration of the schools other than Texas and Oklahoma. Texas already has its own Longhorn Network, and Oklahoma is planning one of its own.

“That would be basically a network that could serve the members that don’t have their own institutional-branded networks. We would have a nice inventory to put together, and we’re exploring that,” Neinas said.

Neinas said the league is not contractually allowed to call its channel the Big 12 Network but it could find another name for it. It’s also unclear what, if any, content related to Texas and Oklahoma could appear on the channel.

“We’re not that far along,Benfica shirt,” Neinas said. “We’re just getting started to see if we can. We’ve got to work on a format, a business plan, all of that first.”

Neinas also said Texas Tech was considered a logical fit to replace Texas A&M as the annual Thanksgiving opponent for Texas but “that has not been finalized.”

Rock Bridge football coach strives to go beyond Xs and Os

二月 24, 2012

COLUMBIA He stands on the sidelines, watching his first-string offense run against a scout team defense with his arms crossed over his chest. A white hooded sweatshirt the size of a parachute covers his upper body, draped over shoulders that resemble bowling balls. The hood is pulled low over his face, barely allowing his eyes to see out. He paces the sidelines of Rock Bridges practice field, each step calculated, his Nikes punishing the field turf.

A.J. Ofodiles offense methodically moves the ball down field with as much organization as a Navy SEAL unit. No movement is wasted. Assistants buzz around the field, pointing out minor but important adjustments between each snap. The ball rarely touches the ground, but when it does, its scooped up as quickly as open parking spaces at the mall on Black Friday.

This is how it works for Ofodile. He watches with Zen-like concentration and calm as his quarterback lofts a deep ball down the sideline. A dropped pass in the end zone merely elicits a raised brow.

“Come on now, lets focus,” he says, clapping his hands.

Ofodile is in his seventh year as the head football coach at Rock Bridge High School. During the school days, he works to update his strength and conditioning courses in the physical education department at the school where he cracks up coworkers at department meetings. As coach, he also hounds counselors and teachers on his players performance off the field.

After the final bell, Ofodile transforms and can be as intense as a wolf chasing his prey. Besides the Bruins’ next victory, the coach is passionate about producing quality human beings with strong work ethics. During his playing days (four years for Missouri and six years in the NFL), Ofodile says he learned about hard work, and dedication is what he tries to instill in his players. To explain its importance, he will tell you about a place 650 miles north of this field in Columbia at a hill in his hometown of Detroit.

For the last 50 years, Derby Hill has hosted the Detroit City Soap Box Derby. For a few years in the 90s, Derby Hill also hosted informal but intense summer workouts for a group of college football players. Ofodile and Missouri strength and conditioning coach Pat Ivey spent some of their breaks from the Tigers football team on this hill, about a mile from Iveys house. The two would jog there every day as a warmup and meet up with other players from the Detroit area that attended schools such as Western Michigan, Central Michigan and Michigan State for grueling sprint sessions up the hill.

“It was a crazy routine. It taught me the responsibility necessary to be successful,” Ofodile said. “It showed me that to gain ground on everybody else you could never rest. I probably never shouldve spent a minute in the NFL talent wise. But those workouts put me above the rest. Good players are good because they work. My whole playing career Ive been around people with a strong belief in working.”

With no coaches around, the intensity of the workouts was up to the player. Ivey and Ofodile, who suited up together for Cass Technical High School in Detroit and were roommates at MU, helped propel each other up the hill.

“We pushed each other. It made it easy to go to work when you had someone like that with you, in your ear the whole time,” Ivey said. “He (Ofodile) definitely knows talent as well. He has a good blend of knowing how to work and having talent.”

That blend has helped numerous Bruins earn Division I football scholarships. Georgia backup quarterback Logan Gray and Georgia starting tight end Aron White played for Ofodile. This year, the Bruins feature two Division I recruits in Trey Millard, who has choosen Oklahoma,Birmingham shirt, and Chase Rome, who had planned to attend Oklahoma State before changing his mind and choosing Nebraska. Without Ofodile, their football futures would be less defined.

“Hes tremendous. Hes really picky about details which can get kind of annoying, but its the reason where I am today,” said Rome, a 6-foot-3, 275-pound defensive end. “He holds me to a higher standard in academics and football. Some kids want to play football to wear the jersey and get the ladies,Lazio shirt, but its not about that. Coach Ofodile keeps the focus on what we need to do to win games.”

At Rock Bridge, Ofodile wraps up practice. Coming off an emotional victory over rival Hickman, he stresses the importance of focus, not riding too high on achievements and approaching every game like its the Providence Bowl regardless of opponent. Onlookers would think Ofodile was a hypnotist. He has his players complete attention, eyes locked on the coach as if they were seeing a Victorias Secret fashion show.

Aside from his extensive football experience, Ofodile strives to make an impression on his players that goes beyond the Xs and Os. While drills and sprints are stressed, his players appreciate the benefits that spill into other areas of their lives besides athletics.

“As far as football, the terminology and the way we run practice helps give me an idea what to expect next year,” Millard said. “Coach Ofodile has taught me to give 100 percent in everything I do, to not quit on something just because I dont enjoy it.”

This includes academics. To do this, Ofodile checks with his players guidance counselors often, making sure theyre making grades and setting examples for the rest of Rock Bridge. If problems arise, Ofodile is the first to respond. Not because people expect him to, but because he wants to. As a former football player, Ofodile understands that an entire school community looks up to football players, respects them and emulates their decisions.

Jennifer Mast, the athletic director at Rock Bridge,Atletico Madrid shirt, says she appreciates Ofodile’s well-rounded approach.

“He (Ofodile) is one of the best coaches weve ever had as far as staying on top of his kids and really knowing his kids,” Mast said. “Hes great with our teachers and counselors. The stereotype is that football coaches are only here for wins, but he never hesitates to help someone out whether theyre on the team or not.”

Ofodile does more than just pursue his coworkers for answers. One minute he may be grilling a teacher for a test score. The next, he will have that same teacher doubled over, shaking with laughter. Vicki Reimler,Napoli shirt, a coworker in the physical education department at Rock Bridge, witnesses Ofodiles humor on a first-hand basis. Beyond his serious demeanor lies a funny, witty side of Ofodile that keeps coworkers on their toes.

“A couple weeks ago at a department meeting, he was telling us some stories. I dont even remember what they were about because I was too busy laughing. By the time we left everyones sides and cheeks hurt because we were laughing so hard,” Reimler said. “Every now and then, hell throw a zinger and just crack you up.”

Relationships are the backbone of Ofodile’s program. While he wants his players to score touchdowns and grab interceptions, Ofodile also wants his players to have a scope on life beyond the Friday lights. Its a simple formula. If players feel like their coaches care about them, they will do anything for the man with the whistle. Those relationships mean stressing blitz packages as equally as world history. Those relationships represent the difference between wide receivers pulling up instead of laying out for an overthrown ball, running backs tiptoeing through a hole instead of driving through it like a truck.

“We want our kids to know there are things more important in life than wins and losses. We want to make sure things are still fun for them,” Ofodile said. “Players enthusiasm comes from these relationships.”

Tigers play for bowl and pride

二月 23, 2012

The Nebraska footballl team’s win on Saturday against Texas A&M clinched the Big 12 Conference North title for the Huskers. Missouri was frustrated when the team’s goal of winning the division title disappeared, but the Tigers are still playing for something this season.

“We have a goal for a championship (every season),” coach Gary Pinkel said. “These guys are very disappointed, and they should be. I’m still excited. Hopefully we can take care of our business.”

The bye week was a chance for players to rest up to finish the season, but players weren’t totally free. The players lifted weights in light workouts Monday,Napoli shirt, Wednesday and Friday. The team ran in different conditioning drills on Tuesday and Thursday, and they also had sessions early Saturday and late Sunday in preparation for the season’s last two games.

Contests at Iowa State this weekend and at home against Kansas after Thanksgiving, are important to the Tigers because of the bowl implications they could have. Kansas State’s recent winning stretch and the Aggies’ losses at home the past two weeks have muddied the water.

“Obviously it would’ve helped us if A&M won (against Nebraska),” quarterback Chase Daniel said. “But it could still help our bowl situation.”

Beyond playing for better bowl position, the Missouri players see the remaining games as a simple test of their character.

“The importance of these last two games is finishing strong and winning. Period,” middle linebacker Dedrick Harrington said. “It’s about pride. They’re very important to us.”

In a larger sense, the last two games can strongly influence how Missouri is perceived. Wins would give Missouri one of its best seasons in recent years, while losses would stamp the Tigers as perennial underachievers.

“It’s just a matter of the stability of our program,” receiver Brad Ekwerekwu said. “If we get down and lose, it eliminates what we’ve been able to build so far.”

I’LL BE BACK: On Monday,Birmingham shirt, junior tight end Martin Rucker said he is sure he will be back for the 2007 season.

Rucker said that because he wouldn’t be a first- or second-round pick in the NFL Draft, he wanted to come back to improve his skills and get his degree.

“For me, (a degree) is the most important thing,” Rucker said. “You might not need it right off, but down the road somewhere you will.”

Statistically, this season hasn’t gone as well for Rucker as he was hoping. He said the numbers he has been putting up need to be better for scouts to really be wowed.

“There are a lot of playmakers on this team,Paris Saint Germain shirt,” Rucker said. “It’s not about me going to the NFL. It’s about this team winning.”

Next season, Rucker will again team up with fellow tight end Chase Coffman to form one of the top tight end duos in the country.

INJURY UPDATE: Rucker should be back at practice this week after missing this past weekend’s practices with a sprain of his big toe. He will be back in time for Saturday’s 1 p.m. game against Iowa State.

Also expected back are safety William Moore,Wales football shirt, who has been out with a slight hamstring pull, and corner Domonique Johnson, who is back from a strained ACL.

Running back Earl Goldsmith is questionable because of a broken hand. If ready, he will continue to return kicks, but Tony Temple will start at running back regardless of Goldsmith’s injury.

Lessons of losing at Missouri Relays

二月 23, 2012

COLUMBIA — Lauren Borduin has done a lot of winning during her track and field career at Rock Bridge.

She won the state title in the 800-meter run as a sophomore,Villareal shirt, missing the state record by just two tenths of a second.

During her junior year, Borduin struggled with a hip injury, but finished the season strong by winning the state title in both the 800-meter and the 1600-meter runs.

But, paradoxically, Borduin’s winning has been a problem for her at times. She has won so often and by such large margins that she hasn’t needed to push her limits.

Then when she has gotten into more closely-contested races on the national level or at state, she hasn’t been comfortable running side by side with her competition. She was too used to running way out in front.

According to coach Neil Blackburn, over the past two seasons there has not been a single runner in the state of Missouri who could challenge Borduin in the 800-meters.

“We went out to the Nike outdoor meet last year, the championships, and she got in there and it was kind of like she didn’t necessarily know how to handle racing with someone on her shoulder,Napoli shirt,” Blackburn said.

Because she has had so much trouble finding someone to challenge her,Sevilla shirt, Borduin was thrilled that Cydney Ross from Villa Duchesne ran right with her in the 800-meters at the season-opening Missouri Relays on Saturday.

Borduin was so thrilled that Ross pushed her to do her best that she didn’t seem to mind too much that Ross won the race.

“It pushes you to your limits,” Borduin said. “When you are running by yourself you can get comfortable and then you don’t really know what you can do.”

Borduin came within three seconds of her state-title-winning time from last season on Saturday. It was the best time she has ever had at the Missouri Relays and would have been the meet record if not for Ross, who crossed the finish line 16 hundredths of a second before Borduin.

Blackburn said the close loss was much more beneficial to Borduin than an easy win would have been.

“(A blowout win) would have been the same thing that she has experienced kind of week-in and week-out for the last two-and-a-half seasons,” Blackburn said. “Having an experience with really and truly having to race and not just going out and running makes a difference.”

Blackburn wanted Borduin to focus on racing rather than her time, so he took her watch away from her just moments before the start of the race. It was a surprise to Borduin, but she said that it was not the first time Blackburn had forced her to give up the watch.

“Having my watch is sort of like a security thing,Kaizer Chiefs shirt, and sometimes I think he just wants me to not be so focused on getting comfortable as much as just running,” Borduin said.

Borduin won the 1600-meter run earlier in the day. She won that race by over eight seconds with Ross finishing second.

Borduin had a chance to become the first girl to win both the 1600-meter and the 800-meter at the Missouri Relays. She won the 1600 last year and the 800 as a sophomore in 2006.

Although they were not upset about the loss, Borduin and Blackburn said they look forward to a possible rematch between Borduin and Ross.

“I hope they see each other again,” Blackburn said. “I hope they get a chance to race and establish kind of that camaraderie through racing to continue to push each other to perform better.”

Rock Bridge also won the boys 4×100-meter relay and the boys 4×200-meter relay this weekend. Blackburn said the relay wins were a result of the commitment of his runners, who stayed in town over spring break to practice together.

Quinn Gray won the boys 200-meter dash for Rock Bridge. Matt Brummit from Hickman won the boy’s high jump.

Missouri had another good day in women’s throwing competition on Saturday. Shernelle Nicholls won the women’s discus, setting a new school record as well as the Barbados national record.

Nicholls also finished second in the shot put. Krishna Lee finished third in the shot put.

Nick Adcock finished second in the long jump, javelin throw, and 110-meter hurdles at the Relays.

The Life of a Bodybuilder

二月 21, 2012

So you think you’ve got what it takes to be a bodybuilder? Can you go through grueling workouts with almost no glycogen storage? Can you avoid all simple sugars for nearly two months? Can you get down to below 5% body fat?

If you are one of the few, dedicated individuals who think they can become a bodybuilder, ask yourself this question. “Can I stop drinking all fluids for nearly 24 hours?” If you answered no to the last question, I don’t think any less of you. In fact, the last 24 hours before a competition are perhaps the most miserable for most bodybuilders. In my case, I can honestly say the hardest part was the carbohydrate depletion. As an author and a Personal Trainer, I found it extremely difficult to function without the primary source of energy– carbs. That being said, my experience as a bodybuilder has molded me into the strongest person I have ever been. I’m going to illustrate my latest experience at the Border States Classic in October 2008, in the hopes of inspiring and educating those who are interested in the sport of bodybuilding to compete.

First and foremost, I should tell everyone that bodybuilding is truly a competition against one’s self. This means that one must constantly be battling their urges to consume junk food, overeat and skip on workouts. No one else can make you do this. Even a Personal Trainer can only give you a roadmap, but you must follow the path. I knew that I could keep myself from indulging in the non-essentials so I decided to try my hand at the Border States. Ten weeks before the show I weighed in at 168 pounds and around 11% body fat. I figured that I couldn’t make bantamweight (up to 143lbs.), but I knew my muscular development was good, so I began to go through a journey of fat burning.

Supplements:

The edge I had over many of my competitors was my knowledge of supplementation. I knew that the right combination of supps could fine tune my body and allow me to go on stage super tight. I was right! I was very, very tight. Below is the list of supplements that I used during pre-competition:

Green Tea Extract, 600 mg daily

7-Keto, 300 mg daily

CLA, 8 grams a day (4 before bed)

Tribulus, 3000 mg daily

Gaspari Novedex, 3 capsules at bedtime

Fish Oil, 30 grams a day

Max Nitro L-Arginine, 10 grams a day on empty stomach

L-Glutamine, 30 grams a day (10 at night)

Controlled Labs Purple Wrath

AST GABA, 5 Grams before bedtime

Alpha Lipoic Acid/ L Carnitine/ Co Q 10 compound, 4 capsules a day

Milk Thistle

Probolic-SR (not the last week before the show)

BSN Lean Dessert (not the last week)

Nature’s Best- Whey Isolate (not the last week)

MHP-XPEL water loss (8 capsules daily for the last week)

This may seem like a lot of supplements, and it is! Remember, a bodybuilder cannot deprive his or her body of the nutrients it needs to repair itself. Actually,Napoli shirt, no one should deprive their body. All we have in life is time and health. It is important to make both of these as good and enjoyable as possible.

Training: High Volume

I used a routine that consisted of hitting every body part twice a week, taking Sunday off. I hit legs and deltoids three times a week. My training was very high volume and looked similar to this:

Shoulders:

Lateral Raise– 4 sets of 15-20 reps, superset with 4 sets of Front Raises 15-20 reps

Overhead dumbbell press– (35 lbs) 4 sets of 25 reps

Wide Grip Upright Rows– 4 sets of 20 reps

Shrugs with light weight– 20 reps, superset with Lateral Raises to finish

My cardio increased significantly the last 3 weeks. I did one half-hour session of cardio on the recumbent bike first thing in the morning, after a shake with Purple Wrath.?I did this again at night after my last meal to ensure that I would deplete my glycogen stores.

Diet: Carbohydrate Cycling

This is truly the hardest part of bodybuilding. I opted to cycle my carb intake; taking in only 40 grams of carbs from oatmeal for 4 days. On the fifth day, I would take in about 200 grams of carbs from oatmeal, sweet potatoes, and brown rice. All of my meals contained about 6 ounces of fish (no salmon), chicken or ground turkey. These are very lean meats, which allowed me to maintain an adequate protein intake. All meals contained 2 cups of green beans, spinach, or bok choy. I would take in 5 meals every day, or the equivalent of 1 meal every 3 hours. I made sure to supplement with plenty of fish oil and Branched Chain Amino Acids?to maintain energy levels and muscle tissue. In essence, I tried to focus on lean protein and veggies.

Note: The last week before competition, I ate only 30 grams of carbs per day until the day before the show. I also drank only 2 gallons of water until two days before (Thursday); that day I drank only a ? gallon of water. Friday I only drank 8 oz. of water. Saturday morning I only had black coffee. I was very thirsty to say the least.

Posing and Tanning: Contest Prep is Vital,Benfica shirt!

A few weeks before the competition I began to tan. This is one of my least favorite parts of my experience. In addition to the regular tanning,Fulham shirt, I applied 6 coats of Pro-Tan, a tanning liquid that is painted on the skin. Now, I have the unfortunate disposition of having body hair, so my stubble was somewhat noticeable. Therefore, before the night show, I applied one more coat to hide the stubble. Tanning is a pain, but it is necessary and very aesthetically pleasing. The lights on stage are white, which makes the competitors look pale. Pale white skin would wash away like sand on the beach. Remember, this sport is about how good you look!

Posing is perhaps the most important part of bodybuilding shows. Flexing each muscle is a form of isometric exercise and helps etch in the definition between muscles. A competitor should be used to flexing for at least 60 seconds to build up endurance. Judges do not like to see competitors shake on stage from lack of muscular endurance. I think I posed for at least 30 minutes every day starting from two weeks prior to the show. The last two days,AS Roma shirt, flexing and posing were my only forms of exercise.

Conclusion: Although it was a challenge, my bodybuilding experience was one of the greatest times of my life. It was a blast being onstage with my fellow athletes. It was even more fun standing right in front of the biggest guy onstage and posing down with him. I suggest that if you are interested in Bodybuilding Competition, you should go to a show to see what the atmosphere is like. See the competitors in person and decide if you have the discipline to transform your body with the necessary strategies.
