Competition fuels defense in Tigers’ first scrimmage

三月 7, 2012

Columbia- All it took was a lightning strike to charge up the defense.

For the first hour of Monday’s scrimmage,Manchester City shirt, the Missouri football team’s defense struggled to stop the offense. Chase Daniel and Chase Patton consistently marched their respective units up the field, and the defense made mistakes that resulted in big gains. In the first half-hour alone, wide receiver Danario Alexander had two catches that totaled 73 yards after poor coverage and missed tackles by the defense.

When lightning was spotted north of the practice fields, however, the team moved inside Devine Pavilion. At that point, the offense was beating the defense 27-8. After the move, the intensity of the practice increased, and the defense forced the offense into mistakes. Only time restraints stopped the defense’s furious comeback, and practice ended around 10:30 with a 49-43 victory for the offense. The team used the same scoring system it has in previous scrimmages, where the defense earns points for stops, turnovers, blocks and the like.

While defensive players admitted that the move inside Devine Pavilion helped them regroup, it was the offense that helped them turn up the intensity.

“They fuel us,” defensive tackle Ziggy Hood said of the offense. “We know we have a high-powered offense, and we just try to compete against them.”

Hood said there is a certain clout that follows the offense wherever the team goes. With returning starters such as Daniel,Atletico Madrid shirt, Tony Temple, Will Franklin, Martin Rucker and Chase Coffman, Hood expects records to fall this year.

“We should have the best offense in the Big 12,” Hood said. “It’s hard to go against them every day, but it’s good for us. We won’t face an offense like them in the season, and when we do go against a high scoring team, we’ll be ready. It’ll be a better game, you know?”

Junior Brock Christopher, the middle linebacker and one of the unquestioned leaders of the defense, said the offense casts a shadow over the defense at times.

“We try to not pay attention to what people say about the offense, though,” Christopher said after the scrimmage. “We’re fortunate to be able to compete against them in practice. They’ve got a lot of great athletes,South Africa football shirt, but we’ve got great athletes on our side of the ball, too.”

Christopher said that even though the defense made mistakes that ended in big gains for the offense, he was happy with the level of competition.

“It gets pretty heated out there,” Christopher said, sweat still pouring down his face even though practice had been over for nearly half an hour.

“The offense has got a lot of swagger, confidence, and we try to stop that.”

That swagger is evident at any practice. From Daniel’s familiar strut on the sideline,Birmingham shirt, to Greg Bracey’s constant talking, the offensive unit clearly knows the talent it possesses.

“It gets intense, but it’s lots of fun,” Christopher added.

Coach Gary Pinkel said he was pleased with the defense’s showing in Monday’s scrimmage.

“They gave up some big plays early, but they responded to adversity well,” Pinkel said. “The defense has a lot of depth. We’ve got some real good athletes there.”

Patton lead the offense in passing, with 216 yards and two touchdowns while completing 12 of 21 attempts. Daniel went for 182 yards on 9 of 12 passing. Jimmy Jackson gained 30 yards and one touchdown on the ground on 12 carries, and Marcus Woods finished with 41 yards on four carries. Cornerback Paul Simpson had an interception for the defense.’

? Woods was carted off the field in the first hour of practice after being tackled awkwardly. Pinkel said the injury appears to be a high-ankle sprain. “If it is that, we’ll put a cast or a boot on his ankle,” Pinkel said. Pinkel also said that Temple, who has been out with a bruised knee, may return next week.

? Kicker Jeff Wolfert appears to be in the running for the kickoff job, as well as placekicking duties. Wolfert, a 2006 Lou Groza Award semifinalist, has been adding leg strength in the past months, Pinkel said. Last year, Adam Crossett handled kickoff duties.

? MU coaches had tentatively planned to release a spring depth chart Monday, but decided to spend the evening looking at film before finalizing it. Check ColumbiaMissourian.com for a depth chart later today.

? The Tigers will practice at 8:15 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. today.

Missouri men’s basketball coach Mike Anderson landed one of the nation’s top point guards when he announced Friday that Second Team Junior College All-American Stefhon Hannah (Chicago, Ill./Hyde Park High School/Chipola Community College) has signed a national letter of intent to play for the Tigers next season.

A 6-foot-1, 175-pound guard originally from Chicago’s Hyde Park High School, Hannah started each of the past two campaigns at Chipola where he led the Indians to a two-year record of 60-7, including a No. 4 finish at the 2005 National Junior College Athletics Association National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kan.,Dortmund shirt, and a No. 1 ranking for a majority of the 2005-06 season.

“I am very excited that Stefhon Hannah is joining our program at Missouri, and he is very excited to be coming here,” Anderson said in a release. “The signing of Stefhon is an outstanding way to close out the recruiting period and it gives us added quality and depth in the backcourt. He is a tremendous leader and winner and he does the things that make his teammates around him better. Stefhon is a tenacious player and a very gifted offensive performer. He scored at a high level at both the high school and junior college ranks, and he gives us an experienced player for our roster.”

Hannah joins Jonathan “J.T.” Tiller (Marietta, Ga.), and transfers DeMarre Carroll (Birmingham, Ala./Vanderbilt) and Darryl Butterfield (Miami, Fla./Mineral Area College) as Mizzou signees during the past week. They will combine with Keon Lawrence (Newark, N.J.) and Vaidatos Volkus (Klaipeda, Lithuania), who both signed in November during the early period – as Anderson’s first class at Mizzou.

Junior Nathan Culp pitched the final two innings and allowed one run despite not giving up a hit. He struck out three and picked up the first save of his career.

The win,Villareal shirt, coupled with Texas Tech’s loss to Oklahoma State on Saturday, guarantees the Tigers at least a seventh-place finish in the Big 12 Conference with the final game of the regular season today.

The Tigers will take the field at Taylor Stadium for the last time in 2006 at Noon today to close out the series with Texas.

Missouri football team prepares for Texas Tech

三月 4, 2012

COLUMBIA It’s just one loss,Bordeaux shirt, but Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel is taking it pretty hard.

“We’re not playing our best, offensively or defensively,” Pinkel said Monday at Missouri’s weekly media day. “It’s my job to get our football team to play better than that, off the bat, and I didn’t do a very good job.”

Missouri will now try to bounce back from the 31-17 loss to Nebraska. The Tigers (7-1, 3-1 Big 12) face Texas Tech on Saturday in a nationally-televised, prime-time road game.

INJURY REPORT

Pinkel announced that middle linebacker Luke Lambert, who has a sprained right knee, will miss his third-straight game.

Lambert is expected to be the only Tiger out for the Texas Tech game. But that’s not to say that the Tigers are in perfect health.

“When you play the schedule we have played and are going to play, you are going to have some guys with bumps and bruises,” Pinkel said.

Quarterback Blaine Gabbert sustained a bushel of big Cornhusker hits this past Saturday in Nebraska, raising suspicion that he might have sustained a concussion during the game. But Pinkel didn’t see any reason to be concerned about Gabbert’s health.

“I don’t know what you are talking about.. he seemed fine to me,” Pinkel said. “He took some hits, it’s a tough business.”

UNDER REVIEW

One big hit on Gabbert will be receiving extra scrutiny this week, after Pinkel asked the Big 12 to review of a fourth quarter play in which Nebraska safety Courtney Osbourne hit Gabbert helmet-to-helmet.

Nebraska linebacker Eric Martin was suspended from the Missouri game for a helmet-to-helmet hit the week before.

Pinkel claimed that his intentions in asking for a review were not vengeful,South Africa football shirt, but rather educational.

“It’s very important for us in teaching our players, our defensive players and everybody, how they are going to call it, how they are going to interpret it,Bayern Munich shirt,” Pinkel said. “We don’t always agree with officiating, never will, never have. But they do a good job, and the communication, I think, is really good.”

WHICH QB?

Although Pinkel knows who his starting quarterback will be Saturday, he does not know who he will be preparing to face in Lubbock. Texas Tech has used two different quarterbacks this season. Both Taylor Potts and Steven Sheffield received playing time in the Red Raiders’ loss to Texas A&M last week.

“I don’t think you can really be concerned about that,Atletico Madrid shirt,” Pinkel said. “We look more at the scheme that they play and what they do.”

MU SOFTBALL: First baseman Amanda Renth was recognized as a top 25 finalist for the Amateur Softball Association’s collegiate player of the year award. Renth is hitting .347 this year with 12 home runs and 45 RBIs.

ROCK BRIDGE GIRLS SOCCER: Blue Valley Northwest beat Rock Bridge 4-1 on Wednesday. Lauren Kelly scored the only goal for the Bruins off of a cross from Erin Bucko in the second half.

ROCK BRIDGE BASEBALL: The Bruins defeated Warrensburg 2-1 on Wednesday. Jordan Adrian got the win over the No. 2-ranked (3A) Tigers,Bordeaux shirt, and Nate Hall had the winning hit. Sehwag in focus as India pick squad for England

三月 1, 2012

. Virender Sehwag’s fitness, though, remains uncertain after he?underwent surgery?on his shoulder. There have been conflicting reports on how long his recovery will take, but the selectors might risk picking him even if he is a doubt for the first Test, which begins on July 21.

?

Sreesanth, Gambhir,Bordeaux shirt, Sehwag and Zaheer have all spent time rehabilitating at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore, and Gambhir and Sreesanth have publicly declared their fitness. Zaheer, too, is expected back. Tendulkar had asked to be rested for the the West Indies tour and should be charged up for England.

?

M Vijay is likely to retain his place at the top if Sehwag doesn’t make the cut but if Sehwag is fit India are unlikely to take an extra opener along – unless they pick a 17-man touring party as they did to South Africa. That squad included two extra quicks, one extra spinner, one extra middle-order batsman, one reserve wicketkeeper and an extra opener.

?

When everybody is fit, the XI selects itself, with Sreesanth edging out Praveen Kumar as the third pace bowler. Praveen will be one of those extra quicks for sure after his impressive showing in the West Indies, and Munaf Patel and Abhimanyu Mithun will jostle for the final pace place. Munaf, though,South Africa football shirt,?wasn’t fit?for the West Indies Tests, and that could play some role in his selection for England. Amit Mishra will be the extra spinner, Parthiv Patel the reserve keeper, and Vijay the extra opening batsman should India need one.

?

The final spot remains the one in the middle order. Suresh Raina has all but earned himself the No. 6 slot for the Lord’s Test, but the extra middle-order batsman makes for an interesting debate. Cheteshwar Pujara is yet to recover from his injury – he picked up a?knee injury?during the IPL, when his foot got stuck in the turf as he attempted a sliding save – and is ruled out. Virat Kohli hasn’t had a great debut series in the West Indies,Napoli shirt, and will be challenged by the Man of the Series in the World Cup, Yuvraj Singh. Yuvraj was expected to make his Test comeback in the West Indies, but a chest infection kept him away. Now that he is fit, Yuvraj v Kohli, mentor and protg of sorts,Benfica shirt, will make for some debate

With districts looming, Hickman sweeps Rock Bridge

二月 29, 2012

COLUMBIA – Hickman senior outside hitter Chloe Perkins picked a good night to return to the lineup, but it had nothing to do with Senior Night festivities or simply playing in Hearnes Center.

With the third game’s scored tied at 1-1 between the Kewpies and rival Rock Bridge,Santos shirt, Perkins,Bayern Munich shirt, having missed several games because of injury, helped save Hickman’s point by diving and keeping the ball up with her hand flat on the floor. Fans yelled in surprise, and once Hickman earned the point moments later,South Africa football shirt, its energized team celebrated the loudest it had all night.

“That’s just an awesome play,” Kewpies coach Greg Gunn said. “When you win a rally like that, that’s huge for momentum. Especially when you have an awesome defensive play like that that saves it for you. And then you’re able to convert and win the point, win the rally and keep the momentum. That was huge.”

Hickman won 25-20, 25-15, 25-21, but Rock Bridge coach Beth Newton thinks the closer scores are indicative of her team’s positive direction.

“We’ve improved a lot,” Newton said about her team, which over the past eight games has gone 5-2-1.

Newton was particularly pleased with freshman Nici Thaler and seniors Courtney Darkow and Alex Perry.

“She’s (Perry) a great server,” Newton said. “When she goes back, we know that she can get on a run, and we needed it at that point.”

Perry served for much of Rock Bridge’s rally to a three-point lead midway through the final game.

Hickman senior middle hitter Leslie Gregory noticed, too.

“They were more prepared for us this time,” she said.

Coincidentally, these teams will play each other again at yet another venue,Real Madrid shirt, Tuesday night in Troy. Hickman is the No. 3 seed in the Class 4, District 9 tournament, and Rock Bridge is No. 6.

“It’ll be pretty interesting just to see them again,” Gregory said.

Newton feels the same way.

“We can always buck up and come at ‘em again,” she said.

Mast’s passion leads Rock Bridge

Mast’s passion
leads Rock Bridge

It didn’t take Jennifer Mast long to realize her life ambition.

By the time she was playing as a sophomore first baseman for the Rock Bridge softball team in 1991, she had all but decided on a career.

“Growing up, I just really enjoyed the camaraderie I had with teammates and the impact my coaches had on my life,” Mast said. “By seventh grade I knew I wanted to be a coach.”

So in the spring of 1999, when then-Rock Bridge athletic director Jeff Moore offered her the head coaching position at her alma mater,Sevilla shirt, the decision to take the job was a no-brainer.

“I’m extremely loyal to Rock Bridge,Newcastle United shirt,” said Mast, who lettered three times as a catcher and first baseman for the Bruins. “I love the fact that the girls I coach are all Bruins. I mean, I wore the uniform, I played on the same fields, I got to play Hickman. It’s just real neat to think about stuff like that.”

Now in her sixth year as coach, Mast has used her background and approachable demeanor to develop into a favorite among players.

“The kids love her,” Rock Bridge athletic director Vicki Reimler said. “There’s just so much passion in her, because (softball) was part of her life as a player and now it continues on as a coach. I’d say she bleeds green and gold.”

This season, though, has tested Mast’s moxie. The Bruins, after starting the season 3-2, have sputtered recently, and enter today’s game against Hickman in the opening round of the Class 4 District 10 tournament with a 6-15 record.

The team returns one senior from last year’s team, and bothstarting pitchers, junior Kayla Turnbull and sophomore Kelsey Oerly, entered the season having never thrown a pitch in a varsity game.

“Sure,” Mast said, when asked if she finds it hard to stay motivated during a tough season. “There are definitely times when things aren’t going quite the way you’d like them to, but you just have to keep after it.”

What keeps her pressing for wins is the girls that show up day after day at practice with their trademark teenage optimism.

“The kids are just so good,” said Mast, who is also an assistant basketball coach. “They’re fun to be around and they like to be around each other, so you can’t stay frustrated for too long when you get to practice and see them.”

The Bruins have lost both games against the Kewpies this year.

Instead of dwelling on those statistics, though, Mast is trying to make the rest of the season, however long it might be, as enjoyable as possible for her players.

“We’ve only got two more days until that next game,” Mast said Monday. “And from there on out, you never know what’s going to happen. I just want to make sure the girls have fun. This is (the team’s only senior) Emily Lay’s last week of practice, I want to make it a good couple of days.”

This laid-back attitude has been a staple for most of the year. While players are quick to point out that she works them hard, they have appreciated the way Mast has alleviated the pressure to win.

“She takes things seriously,” Turnbull said. “But she doesn’t make things too stressful or make a situation bigger than it is. We’re always joking around at practice and games, making fun of each other. And that’s important. It’s important to have fun.”

In the world of high school athletics, Mast understands that people often get caught up in the importance of wins and losses.

“That’s how we measure success in sports,” Mast said. “And I’m not saying that’s wrong, but it’s pressure. I’d just rather take the pressure off and let the kids have a good experience than force them to worry about whether or not we’re winning every game.”

It is this philosophy that has also earned Mast the respect of the school’s athletic department,South Africa football shirt, including Reimler.

“She is truly a good person,” Reimler said. “She has the highest integrity, no matter what happens during the season, or what the situation is,Santos shirt, she’ll never take it out on the kids. She runs a very solid program.”

Mast hopes to take that program further next season, when the Bruins will return eight starters, all of whom have gained valuable varsity experience this fall.

While Mast isn’t sure exactly how long she would like to continue coaching, she says that, for the time being, it is something she is thoroughly enjoying.

“You know, I love it,” she said. “Seeing these kids develop and mature in the three or four years they spend in the program, that’s just a real rewarding experience.”

Mavericks talking move to fairgrounds
The Mid-Missouri Mavericks met with the Boone County Commissioners Monday afternoon to discuss the team’s proposal for a new privately-funded stadium.

“We made a presentation regarding the possibility of building a new stadium out at the fairgrounds,” Mavericks’ co-owner and president Gary Wendt said. “They couldn’t have been more professional or more receptive.”

Presiding commissioner Keith Schnarre said that he and his fellow commissioners will begin evaluating the proposal at a work session today.

“We have to study it to see if we have any interest or not,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of discussion to do. If we have more interest, we have more talks (with Wendt).”

The presentation outlined the costs for a new stadium at between $5 and $6 million. The figure includes an optional $1 million to be spent on upgrades.

“At least it’s something that doesn’t involve public money, which is better off than other proposals we’ve had in the past,” Schnarre said.

He said he couldn’t answer how likely the proposal was to being approved until initial discussions took place.

Under the plan, the stadium would be completed in time for the 2007 Frontier League season.

“They’re wanting to go pretty fast,South Africa football shirt,” Schnarre said. “Government moves pretty slow.”

Wendt and his brother, Greg, bought the Canton (Ohio) Coyotes of the Frontier League in October 2002,Celtic shirt, then moved the team to Columbia for the 2003 season.

The Wendt group made a deal with MU, signing a five-year lease to play at Taylor Stadium. One provision of the lease allowed the Mavericks to opt out after two years. Staying for a third,Porto shirt, though, meant that the full five-year term would be in effect.

Wendt discussed a privately-funded stadium earlier this month with city officials that included mayor Darwin Hindman and city manager Ray Beck.

How to Play Drums

二月 10, 2012

Copyright (c) 2011 Joe Maldonado
The most common problem with many amateur drummers is that they do not know where and how to get started. Their approach towards learning how to play the drums is wrong in many ways and they don’t even know about it. Some of them are so ambitious that they end up trying to play the most advanced patterns before learning the basics of drumming.
You can learn to play drums in two ways. You can hire a drum instructor to teach you or you can learn yourself. Of course, hiring a drum instructor would cost you about 2000 dollars per year. Learning to play drums yourself is not impossible but it is difficult. It needs self-discipline and some time daily for your drumming. There is a popular saying that “Practice makes Perfect”. Thus, the only way to get perfect is by practice. Only practice won’t suffice, the practice has to be perfect as well.
In order to learn how to play the drums, you have to set mini goals which are realistic to achieve within a drumming session. You should make a schedule before sitting on the drums of what you want to learn. If you want to sound as good as a professional drummer you will have to take more time out than just a few hours a week. It is like the schedule of an athlete who prepares his or her day for the sport they play.
In order to speed up the drums learning process, there are a few things to remember. You need to buy a 5 piece drum set online. A decent drum set might cost $170 or more. Check out for Bridgecraft and Yamaha drums for the best deals. You need to carry out a lot of comparison shopping online. You should consider creating a soundproof room to practice in. Auralex Studiofoam Wedge Panels cost about 50 dollars per rack. This is necessary if you do not want the neighbors to start complaining.
You also need to buy a brand name drumstick like Pro-Mark, Vic Firth or Zildijan. These drumsticks are extremely reliable,South Africa football shirt, durable and strong. They may be costly but they cost less than buying three cheap drumsticks that are not durable. You need to grip the drumsticks in a manner which enables you to play with comfort,Peru football shirt, extract the right bounce and utilize drumstick performance to the fullest.
You should start off with the drumming by maintaining the tempo on hi-hat with the hand you’re more comfortable with. You need to start playing with a basic pattern on hi-hat and integrate with basic pattern of bass drum. Most important thing is not to become over-ambitious. You should now integrate the snare into the drum beat. These basic steps will help you to gain confidence.
Once you know how to play drums with this basic drum beat, and then try incorporating the rest of the drum hardware into the beat. Try to be creative and develop your own unique style of playing drums. You just try to be creative and originality will comes hand in hand with creative. You also need to choose a genre of drumming. There are many genres of drumming such as rock,Sunderland shirt, jazz,Bayern Munich shirt, r&b, Latin and African drums.
